Backfire, BOOM, intake manifold...

Went to start the car this morning, and it turned over, but wouldn't start. Kind of sounded like it jumped time, the way it was psinning over so fast. Gas pedal was stuck open, not sure why, so I opened the hood, messed around a bit with the throttle cables and throttle body, freed up up the trottle cable, jumped back in, turned it over and BOOOM! Now I have a huge hole in my intake manifold. :(

I am pretty sure the timing belt broke right when I turned the key intially. Looks I will be busy this weekend. :)

Holy monkey, that's crazy! You see that kinda stuff on NOS-equipped vehicles. There's lots of videos on YouTube of that happening on Mustangs when there is a NOS backfire, since those have composite manifolds from the factory. But from a gasoline backfire, that's pretty wild... Probably not what you expected to see when you popped the hood, eh?

not a mechanic but heard...sometimes when the belt blows, it allows the valves to hit the piston, causing more damage...maybe someone else can chime in here....

Yep, that is always possible. When I parked the car Thursday, it was running great, tried to start it this morning, it turned over normally for about 1 second, then I heard a little something different, then it turned over easily like it jumped time. I should know by Sunday if it runs or not. LOL.

Ouch, have worked on chrysler products for over 12 years and never seen that. That's an interference engine but rarely have I had them make contact, the cams usually stop in a neutral position. Common for the tensioner idler and water pumps to seize up. Might have a plenum around the shop if it didn't get tossed, can take a look if you'd like.

Well I have the timing covers off, there is about an 8" section of the belt where there are no teeth left, and a couple of other areas where there are 3-4 missing. With the crank at TDC the camshafts timing marks are almost 180* off. It does have the new metal tensioner pulley on there, but looks like it still has the stock water pump in it. Both turn freely though. I will replace the water pump anyways. I will get new belts and a water pump tomorrow, then I will get to work on the intake.

Nick, I will let you know if I need you to look and see if you have a plenum. The guy who normally works on my stuff (when I can afford it LOL) says he is pretty sure he has one. He just did a 3.5 liter engine swap a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for the offer!

Doesn't look like anything that couldn't be fixed with a little duck tape and zip ties!

Or perhaps you should just look for a highly reliable 4WD Blazer for like 2K. Geeze, I wonder where you could find something like that these days? ;)

All kidding aside, rotten thing to have happen (damn Mopar), but sounds like you have the situation under control. Good luck on the fix.

Holy schinkes Skylar!!! Did that leave any dents in the hood? Looks like it should have if it didn't.
LMAO John!!!!! If that thing is still around in like a month or 2 I'll b very interested. Been looking for a cheap, reliable vehicle. I'll email you when I have the $$$ to see if it's still around.

Looks like another build project thread is in the works.

Not the best way to start the day Skylar, but hey, it wasn't a Monday.;)

Looks like a good time to supercharge.
Thats pretty wild! I would check the pcv system over real good, make sure its not pluged up/stuck valve.

Never seen that before.....

Skylar...that's some bad luck there buddy. Hope your engine isn't an interference motor as I lost a belt on a F Focus and 5 bent valves. Tore in to it like a monkey on a banana boat,585.00 later, perfect. Good luck.

A week later and everything is good to go. :) A few pics from finishing things up. Wed night I installed the new waterpump and put the new timing belt on. Today I installed the new/used intake, finished installing the timing belt covers, new belts, and put everyting back together. I figure I saved myself over 600 bucks doing it myself.
