Ban the Can

Next year I will have a sign on the door that states something like "If your sled has a Can stay out of my Place". I challenge other business owners to do the same. We can not afford losing more trails. Let's see how many Business Owners are with me.

Cans are the equivalent to scumbag diesel truck owners modifying their truck to belch soot... (Rollin Coal).

It makes everyone hate diesel, yet new diesel trucks are as clean or cleaner than gasoline trucks.

Nice call. Just don't get the tree huggers involved here, they want us living in caves. Time for some snowmobile organizations to get involved and stay under the radar to get the cans banned.

If there were an effort by businesses to do that I would like to see a list compiled (or thread) of places on board with "ban the can" I would plan my rides to make my stops at those businesses, for fuel, food, and or lodging.

Well, the DNR has finally been cracking down on them, they have been out with their decibel meter & handing out fines. Quite frankly, it's about friggin time. I love the sport, I live near the trail, & can't stand them. I've ridden with a few that were piped & told them to stay in the back, wayyyy back. As I've said in the past, there is a place for them, it's called the race track.-Mezz

They don't even belong on most race tracks, Snowmobiles race on lakes surrounded by houses, they don't like the noise either. I also say to stop spending money at companies that make these things. When they have thousands made, they know that the majority are ending up on trail sleds. Performance diesel fans are starting to do the same thing, not supporting the "smoke boys"

I'll admit I have a can on my sled. It is a rumble pack and I love it for numerous reasons. I do mostly off trail riding and it loses at least 10 lbs weight and does gain some performance be it not much. The rumble pack is very normal sounding under lower RPMS. It only gets louder when you get on the gas and I like the sound it makes, but don't think it to be obnoxious. I also use common sense and am respectful to people when i'm in a populated area. My Rumble pack allows me to be respectful. I'm just as annoyed by people who have cans that are constantly obnoxious or they just don't have any respect. Like most things its the few bad apples that will ruin it for all  :(

I also want to add that I respect what BBB bar is doing even though I have a can. Something needs to be done, so the sport isn't ruined for all.

OT from thread. So these meat heads modify the trucks to do this? Living out here in redneck country, every good ole boy has a black belcher it seems. Have the cabin fresh air intake shut off all the time in order to keeps stench out of vehicle.

Can't fix stupid I guess.

Me too. But my wife and I also ride motorcycles. And since many businesses cater to both crowds, I'd hope the same effort would carry over to the loud motorcycles in the summer too. I guess the question I have is... Is it about keeping ALL the local residents from being miserable from the noise, or only the ones who might work to close trails?
Or, is the loud motorcycle issue a "lets not go there" topic?

I have mixed emotions on the topic not because I agree the noise is stupid but because it's not gonna do a damn thing. It's similar to the problems I face when I am grooming. It's a fresh groomed trail and idiots hammer it tearing it up and messing it up for the rest. I understand the differences but it comes down to just how dumb some people are. A measure to not allow people in an establishment just punishes the guys with cans but will do nothing to actually combat the problem,,,, just my opinion

I really hope something catches on like this. For the past two years, I've had a feeling that things like this were going to start happening. The sleds just get faster and louder it seems. I live next to a "Biker Bar" so in the summer I get that noise that shakes that house at midnight. I can understand what these homeowners are thinking. Now I can't do anything about my noise problem, but people with trails going thru their property surely can and the first domino has started.

Really hope this catches on and wakes people up. I also hope we start seeing some enforcement from DNR. I don't have any thoughts on how to correct this problem moving forward, but something has got to start moving our sport towards eliminating the excessive noise.

Several Provinces in Canada are writing tickets to ANYONE who does not have the original factory installed exhaust system.

No decibal check--No arguments--If it's not factory you get a ticket. I would like to see them also impound the sled until repairs can be made. Ruin a guys vacation and you'll get their attention pretty quick.

Maybe the U.S.A. should look at this approach.

Seems to me any biz can refuse to serve a lawbreaker eatery, bar, gas station, hotel ,motel, Holiday Inn. What is the offender going to do....call the cops on himself???! ..LOL ....I like this & hope other biz signs up for the ban.:)

I use to live in an area that had a lake in front of me and a huge rock hill behind me. The "valley" created a sound chamber of sorts. This whole area was a very scenic area and was a route used by many motorcyclist. The noise of mosty harleys was obnoxious to say the least - often would have to pause when on the phone because it was so loud. I did talk to a cop I knew and said these boys were well above the 87 dB level allowed. The cop rolled his eye and said they don't stop them and said that is the culture in WI - it is okay to have loud bikes. Cars/trucks etc, no so. A double standard that would not be enforced.

The issue with snowmobiles vs on-road vehicles, I can't close my street in front of my house if a loud bike goes by. However, a private landowner can close the trail that crosses his/her property without much the snowmobile world can do about it. And getting a new trail started is a whole lot harder than one would think. We must unite, because the is what happens when we don't. The trails will be closed.

Get the gas stations to ban loud pipes. Loud Pipes- No Gas ;)

Also cann't figure out why Harley Owners get away with their exhaust systems as 90% have been modified.

I agree 100% Lenny. Its the idiots without common sense and respect that ruin it for all.

I also have aftermarket exhaust on my motorcycle and again, it's not obnoxious and just has a nice throaty sound. I ride my motorcycle daily to work in the summer. When I leave in the morning I drive off in a nice respectful manner. No issues. Same if I come home late. I can't say enough for common sense and respect.

the highlighted part is bogus and will never hold up. Next season I am putting a can on my sled and it will be no louder than stock but eliminate 6 lbs and open up some serious room under hood with less heat under hood
