Baraga County Trail 109 north and south of Alston

Just a FYI, Trail 109 south from Twin Lakes is groomed and good for 15 miles. Just north of Alston trail has not been cleared and travel from this point is not advised as just south of Alston the trail gates are closed. You will need to turn around and head back to Twine Lakes, trail 3.
The south end of 109 from Sidnaw to Rousseau's, and into Mass City was excellent.
Merry Christmas to everyone, Remember to Ride Right and Ride Safe.

Baraga Tourism Bureau needs to be called out for the incompetent trail maintenance, and failing to groom this portion on trail EVERY YEAR! No matter the conditions! The DNR needs to do something as many times the trail is unsafe!

These are the phone numbers to use for complaints on this issue.

Baraga Chamber of Commerce 906-358-8808, or 800-838-1563.

Baraga Visitors/Tourism Bureau, 906-524-7444, or 800-743-4908.

Michigan DNR Baraga Service Center 517-284-6000, or DNR State Office of Law Enforcement 517-824-6000

I don't like to complain unless it is justly warranted. This is, as it continues to go on year, after year. No matter the conditions!

Thanks for the numbers. Will make it a lot easier for people to call, including myself.

Thanks for the concerns and the phone numbers, as I would agree the trail after the turn-a-round heading south is less then safe. I have never had the chance to ride on this trail late season, but it has the same problems every year between when the trails open and mid-January.
Merry Christmas, and Happy Riding.

In the past, when you call the Baraga Tourism/Visitors Bureau, they will act as they have not heard of any such complaints of this issue. I have responded to them numerous times as that being BS, and absolutely untrue. They are fully aware of the poor, incompetent trail care, grooming that they do on that section of trail many times over! This is why I have listed the other contacts phone numbers. The Baraga Chamber of Commerce is concerned on the loss of business, such as lodging, food, gas and so on for their Chamber members. The DNR can get this on going problem corrected with multiple incoming complaints on this issue. I hate to use the phase of the trail being unsafe, but I have known of accidents probably due to the poor grooming on that portion of trail. I have witnessed two leg injury accidents myself in years past that happened due to the loss of control, and hitting a tree/trees sideways. Most female riders detest riding this trail, I don't blame them! It doesn't have to be this way!

Its a swamp. The water is two feet deep in places. Rarely is it groomed befor the middle of Jan. I always lead so I'd always drag my buddies through there with there new sleds first week in dec.
