big problem

um,,,I was changing spark plugs yesterday and had a problem. One broke off and not sure the best way to deal with it. I talked to a buddy and he said to clean all the debris out of the cylinder as best as you can with a wire and duck tape. He said porcelain and metal will get in there and it needs to come out.

My initial atempt is to remove the exhaust manifold to get working room, it's on a GMC truck. I guess I'll use a punch and chip the porcelain out trying my best to keep it from falling into the cylinder. I'll use a square style easy out and try and get the remains of the threaded section of the plug out. Any ideas, am I going about this all wrong? Never happened before so I am not sure. I do not wanna take the head off and am trying to avoid it

I had a blown out spark plug fixed on my Expedition once. The guys had to tap out the spark plug hole. They hooked (duct tape) a shop vac to the exhaust Pipe and did their thing. After tapping out the plug they blew out the cylinder with compressed air and the shop vac sucked the debris out the exhaust ports

Happened a few years ago to me on the #9 cylinder on a Dodge V10. Not much room, but fire it up and tap on the porcelain with something to break it.You'll know when you've accomplished this, and stay out of the way while tapping. After the porcelain blows out use a square style easy-out on it.The heat from running the engine will help get the plug out too..TRUST ME this works,as i learned it from a local shop, and it worked for me great.I borrowed the easy-out from them and they said that every time they used it it was for an AC plug, and yes mine was an AC too !!Good luck.....

I got the porcelain out in one piece, it was loose so I picked at it with a screwdriver I ground sharp and it came out whole. I had a set of square style easy-outs. I heated up the area with map gas and quickly inserted the easy-out and tap it in. Easy out just spins. I drove it in far as I could with some serious wraps and still it spins. I have a 12 point socket 1/2 drive on a 12" breaker and it bits real good but just when I think it should break loose it spins loose. It was a tad windy blowing my heat around more than I liked so tomorrow I'll try an heat it up better and see what happens. It dulled my easy-out so I'll get another new set. Hopefully it will come out tomorrow.

yesterday I sprayed the plug area with PB blaster. The owned of Napa told me to let it sit 24 hr. After about 8 hrs I scraped off looses crap around the area and sprayed it again heavily. So, today I go out there with the same exact set up as 2 days ago and it cracked loose and came out. I now am a believer in PB blaster penetrating spray. Truck is running smooth, that rear plug must have not been changed for a while. The gap was way large and the electrode was half gone. The EGR was also acting up so I removed it and sprayed it out, cleaned it up and it ideas like it should. It was idling high like I had a vacuum leak. Now to change the oil and the old plow truck will be ready for sale.

Just as i thought....Glad you got it out !!

I checked out this problem on the net and see it is more common than I thought. Many guys said not to use Bosch platinum but I had 8 Bosch plugs in my tool box for the same motor from a few trucks back. I used them but I did take others advise and put anti seize on the threads
