Bike locks

I just bought an electric bike (Rad Wagon 4)and am worried about theft since the first three months will be in San Diego.

Do any of you know anything about quality bike locks? Yes, I know all locks can be defeated, and yes, I'm working on insurance. But a quality lock might make them go to the next bike to steal.

Thanks!

I'd also look at GPS tracking, they have many rather cheap these days you can add that will track it if taken
as for locks, I think most real crooks can defeat any and even smaller snatch and grab guys can use bolt cutters pretty fast which will cut thru most basic locks,

something like this would get my vote here, as it is thick enough most bolt cutters won't cut, but good crooks can pick locks so?

So, if they want ti they will get it

Quality lock will make the lazy thief move on. Sorry, none that I know of.
GPS tracker for the determined thief.

That's what I use.

Nothing is safe does not matter how many locks you have on it. If you think you can lock a bike and it will be there in a few hours will not happen. I do have electric and a few carbon bikes I would never lock.. Locks just slow then down a little bit or make the honest honest. Youtube has a guy the lawyer lock picker its unbelievable how quick he can pick them.

I know that, but I'm asking for help choosing a lock.

I had two tree stands stolen in the same season a couple years back. I bought a few Kryponite bike messenger chains and locks. The chain is a square link that virtually impossible to cut with a bolt cutter, the weak link is the actual horse shoe shaped lock that you connect to the chain. Im sure a pro thief can pick the key. Its definitely a theft deterrent. I spent $ 125 a piece to lock up a $80 tree stand. The chain is about 3ft long and weighs alot. Bike messengers use them in NYC

I was going to take some time off posting since my last "run in" but this anecdote was simply too appropriate not to share: back in the early
70s when the Honda CR250M Elsinore first came out a buddy and I each bought 1 of the first ones out. We lived in the same apartment complex. I would park mine in my living room on a tarp every night. He chose to chain his to a 30' light pole in the parking lot with the equivalent of a logging chain and a monster lock. So he comes out one morning and his bike AND the light pole are both GONE. Thieves had unbolted the 2" or so bolts holding the light pole and the only thing left was the concrete pedestal and loose wires.

this is a good lock/set up too,. but to be honest, its basically what I listed only adding a chain to things?
it has basically the almost the same u bolt for a lock as the chain less version(only thinner so actually easier to cut thru)
only this will cost more due to the added chain!

as stated a GOOD crook will get it, the basic NY U bolt is just thicker and will re quire special tools to cut it off, AKA take longer to cut off if they do it that way
so the time to cut either u bolt lock off, the chain isn;t adding any more down time or prevention IMO
your just spending more money buying it!
NOT saying its a bad deal, just more money!

Kryptonite used to be the gold standard, seems like they might still be. I have no idea why they would want to put NY on half of their products. Anyway the regular old ones look like they are still there with no NY. I used to use just the U lock no chain. U through the easily removable front tire, frame, and around light pole.

The New York label has to do with their theft guarantee I think. This is their only lock that that they will cover theft in Manhattan.

I bet you still wish you had that Elsinore!

Darn tootin'... if only for the investment value...'cept now I'm too old (and heavy) to ride it like it needs to be ridden

Vintage MX bikes are crazy. I'm even feeling old as the bikes that i rode in the 90's are considered vintage and are going for crazy prices. OP you will like your electric bike, wife and I bought a couple last year and love them.
