Where are you starting this trip from and ending at? From Biwabik you could head south down towards Two Harbors and then over to Silver bay and then up the Tomahawk trail to Ely? Are you looking for just a one day detour?

hmm

The trip starts in Two Harbors, then Biwabik, Then Ely, Then silver Bay, then Gran Marais and then back to Two Harbors. Wanted to add an extra leg or two and did'nt know when to insert them. That's why I was thinking of branching out NW for a couple days between Biwabik and Ely...

North Country Inn in Orr, it is a great hotel right in town and right on the trail.
Stay there and head to MelGeorges on elephant lake(about 20 miles north by trail) for the Elephant Burger. Mel Georges also offers lodging...

Chillywilly, as far as something between Biwabik and Ely all there is for the most part is wilderness. North of Ely is the Boundary Waters, which will not be a choice to ride in. The only direction that makes sense is going is west-northwest to places like Grand Rapids, Virginia, Side Lake, Cook, Orr, Ash River or perhaps Big Fork. There are places to stay in all of those towns. I guess as long as you are staying in Biwabik you could always go downhill skiing at Giants Ridge to kill a day.

Awesome

There are several ways to go from Biwabik. Get to the Iron Trail north to Tower, then the Taconite trail to the Arrowhead to Orr. Purely a guess of 120 miles, I have done it but haven’t kept track of the miles. You can also take the Laurentian west thru Virginia up to the Taconite to the Wolf track trail into Cook then take the Arrowhead to Orr. This would be a close to the same mileage.
