Black flies in the porkies

Generally speaking the flies, skeeters, and ticks are bad from April thru October. So end of June puts you right in the middle of it. haha
Soo far this season its been cool which has kept the flies to a minimum but the ticks and skeeters are thick over this direction. And if the warm weather comes the flies will come right along with it.

Bring a beekeepers hat! I'm not kidding, i am going to get a few. I live an hour southwest of the Porkies, (15 minutes from the national forest boundry and was there yesterday) So i cant speak of how the park is up on the big lake but the little black flies were bad here only like a 3 week period but the mosquitos are really bad! Some saying the worst year ever. We took some Il. friends waterfalling and we all were swarmed So the plan is sweatshirts and jeans, thick clothing (so you dont have to bath in chemical repelant) and a beekeepers hat.(or some kind of net hat)

Check really well for ticks when you get back, my supervisors are finding them either on land areas they had never seen them before, or thicker than ever in places they had been in previous years.

As a bee man, and northern Ontario cottage owner, I can tell you that most bee type head covering have far too large netting to work for many of the tiny bugs that can bite you. A good head net will save the day, and don't forget to spray up your pant legs or tie them off with string. Head nets have tiny webbing and works for everything out there save for chiggers...which is more a southern thing.

Be diligent when checking for ticks. I have a few friends that have contracted Lymes disease from tick bites while in and around the Porkies.
Even with the best clothing and repellants be prepared for the mosquito bites with some anti itch cream/spray.

Was looking though some old posts regarding the timing for black flies and Lenny I'm not sure how I missed this one before but I almost spit my coffee out when I read it this morning!
