Black Flies/Mosquitoes on North Shore of Minnesota over the 4th

I was wondering how the insect situation is on the Minnesota North Shore, especially Black Flies. I would think the black flies would be gone by now.

My concern: The last time I went up in the early summer, June 30, 2012, the Black Flies were so so bad, it was literally not possible to be on the trails, especially near the lakeshore. It ruined our trip, and DEET did nothing.

Can anyone tell me how it is, in particular, around Tettegouche and Crosby Manitou?

Thanks!

I was up there 10 days ago, and though the mosquitos were as they always are, tons of them, I didn't see a single black fly.

Not sure how it changed in the last 10 days, but that was my experience. We hiked Tettegouche, Gooseberry, and Temperance River.

Thanks! From what I have been reading they come out soon after green up so I wouldn't imagine they would start now. Well we're going. August and September are always the best times but I can't wait that long!

They are bad. We've been up here in Finland for 2 weeks and its hard to enjoy a campfire even. Mostly just Mosquitos but now the little gnats are really out also. Yuck
