I have a 2002 mxz 600 and 2 weeks ago the brake starting feeling soft and quit working in the warmer weather (40 deg). after it sat a little while it was fine. I checked the fluid and it is a little low. I am looking for recommendations on the best way to bleed and what type of brake fluid to use.

I am planning to start there is there anything else I should look for that will case the brakes to fade?

If your fluid level was low that would cause brake fade. I would fill it first before any thing else. The type of brake fluid should be noted on the cap most likely dot 3. Dot 4 is for high temperture. As far as brand it dosen't make a difference they all have to meet a standard. You can use dot 4 in a dot 3 application but not dot 3 in dot 4 application. So if you really don't know use dot 4. Owner's manual should tell you also.

Air in the system is the biggest cause of brake fade or spongy brakes. Overheating can cause that as well but is more unlikely. If the fluid is low I would look at why because you may need to replace the pads and or rotor. Typically the system does not leak so the fluid went somewhere and under normal conditions as brakes wear down it goes in behind the piston in the caliper as the pads get thin just like in a car.

On the brake reservoir cap you should find what type of fluid to add wether it be dot 3 or 4. My newer doo uses 4 but older stuff used 3. You will add fluid once the cap is removed and quite often you can bleed the air out by pulling the brake handle with the cap removed and see air bubbles coming up and the handle getting firm again.
