Wow! off topic rambling at it's best. I have a two year old australian sheppard. My wife brings home this giant bone supposedly a cow bone. After chewin on this big boy her breath smells horrible! I have been told bones pose a number of risks such as splintering and intestinal blockage,(ouch!!). She is mad at me,(both the dog and wife)for taking it away!! Yesterday she broke off a chunk the size of a golf ball,(looked like a small sea urchin!!), that was the last straw!!

Yea, I hear ya. Sometimes when my sister comes over with her dog so our dogs can play she will bring those white bones for both. I hate them darn things as my dog will always choke when trying to swallow a chuck she ripped off. I always let her chew for awhile and then I toss it.

I never ever let her have any type of chew toy while in a crate cause if she chokes and I'm not around...that would be absolutely horrible to come home too.

Stay with raw bones they dont splinter. Go to the meat market and ask for a marrobone. Your dog may brake off small parts but nothing big. Get a long one if they have them it drives the dog nuts to get all the marrow out. And one the plus side you can put peanut better back in. The one that my lab is working on she has had at least 6 mo. And no chew toys in the crate.

You should always boil bones, it reduces the chance of colitis. I get the meat market bones like jay does they last about 2 days with German Shepherds
