All-

Does anyone have an idea about how to get a snowmobile and one or two riders from Sault Ste Marie Canada across the border to Michigan?

My son and I are planning an epic ride; hoping to start in Valcourt, QC, ride across Quebec and cross into Ontario near Rolphton, over to the Soo then into Michigan and end in Eagle River, WI.

The only idea i can think of is arranging with a tow service to meet us on the CA side, takes us across and drop us at some trail head.

Really, any idea that anyone has would be welcome.

Maybe try talking to Decker tours in eagle river they might have an idea because I'm thinking they may have done a tour around Lake Superior.

There is some kind of transportation across the border for sleds. If I were you, I'd get with one of the snowmobile clubs at Sault Ste Marie, on the Canadian side. OFSC might be able to help also. You can locate the clubs through the OFSC web site. Good luck! That's a nice sounding trip!

Try crossing at Thesalan to Drummond Island. You can check in with customs on Drummond. There used to be a tree line to follow across the North Channel. From Drummond you take a ferry to mainland Michigan to Detour. There is lodging on Drummond not so much at Detour, I have stayed at both places. From Detour to Newberry, to Munising, to Marquette crossroads area to Eagle River. You can make Eagle River from Munising in a day.

I went from Eagle River to Sudbury and back many years ago. I'm sure there are better trail routes available now than there was back then. It was a great trip and I would like to try it again but getting to old for that kind of running. Sounds like a fabulous trip, good kuck to you.

Gosh - I would think there would be some kind of service to help you cross - the kind that usually picks up broken down sleds. I know we have the numbers for the guys in the western UP, where we normally ride. I would start with the local clubs like mentions.

Assuming you are planning a 2018 trip?

I bet someone in the Sault Trailblazers club would help you out, at a price of course. A few of the guys that groom and maintain the trails work at the Poo/Cat dealer in Sault, Canada. They are a good group. We met them up in Hearst last year and rode down to Searchmont behind them. Maybe call there with your idea.

Sounds like an awesome trip! I've had my eye on Ontario riding for a few years now, but about the only reason I have not gone is the sky high trail permit costs.

Thanks to everyone on their ideas. I never thought about contacting a local club to see if they had ideas. Can you imagine that conversation?
"Hey there, I know you don't know me, but could pick me up, take me across the border and drop me off in the woods?" Sure, buddy, happy to do so. That doesn't sound sketchy at all. The more time I have to plan the better off I will be.


As a few pointed out, with conditions as they are, this probably won't happen this year anyway, so I might have more time than I need to plan this out.
Also, I'd be happy to add some pics, but as I have gps tracker that I can add to my sled with a RAM mount, I might do a website like I did when I traveled from Chicago to the top of Alaska a few years ago (http://tcridescolorado.blogspot.com/2009/06/first-three-days.html).

That would be really cool if you did that! I took a quick peek at the link to that ride, pretty neat.
