My daughter just purchased 2013 Kia Soul & Sales Person told her that she must use KIA oil filter or the 10 year 100,000 mile engine warranty would be void. Is this legal? Anyone else that owns a KIA know about this?

I have heard it, and if you google it it appears to be true or a common belief.

Imagine it's legal if you do anything that causes a problem, your warranty is void.

This sounds similiar to the Snowmobile Mfrs. that require you to burn their brand of oil while the machine is under warranty. I imagine most of us do for that first year and then move on to another oil of our choosing. If Kia is going to offer an engine warranty for 100K then you have to follow their rules if you want that protection, the choice is yours, which makes it legal.

...and that brings up another question...if you go to one of those 10 Minute Oil Change places, do you have to take along your Kia Filter or do they stock them? If they don't, it sounds like Kia is steering you back to the dealer for Oil Changes.

If a manufacturer requires you to use their product to maintain warranty, dont they have to provide it for free?? Or am I off on this?

I would say no, not free. Like anything else, use it and maintain it as designed or it's void.

Read some claims that the off brand filters will fit but won't hold the high oil pressure they need.
No idea if that would be true or not, but how would you prove it if you needed to.

Just go to the dealer and buy the filters.

My only experience in a Kia dealership, Asked for a price - was told do you want the car or not?
If you do we need to go in the sale office. And will discuss price in front of the video cameras.
That's when I left.

Is this dealership owned by the Soprano's?

Unfortunately many dealers play this game of telling consumers thier warranty will be void unless they use only parts they sell. This is not true and the person saying that could be violating the Fair Trade Act. Get them put that in writing than contract the state attorney general. Just because a sales person said it though, does not make it true. Salesman are notorious for saying anything that will get every last dollar from the customer they can get.

Know your righ, read this...FTC Consumer Alert

If you own a car, you know how important it is to keep up with routine maintenance and repairs. But can a dealer refuse to honor the warranty that came with your new car if someone else does the routine maintenance or repairs?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, says no. In fact, it's illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads, and inspections. Maintenance schedules vary by vehicle make, model and year; the best source of information about routine scheduled maintenance is your owner's manual.

I had a Subaru once and went with a 10 min. oil change place filter, it did not have the proper check valve in it and would drain empty when motor was shut off. It starved the #4 cylinder for oil until pump filled the filter and oil made its way to that cylinder. Kia may have similair situation???? Loud knocking sound gave it away. Changed to correct filter and motor was fine.(I lucked out). My Wheel Horse Garden tractor has a check valve in the gas line filter to prevent gas syphoning back to tank causing excessive cranking of motor to pump gas to carbs causing premature starter and or starter selinoid failure. Just use the correct filter, they give you a 100,000 mile warrenty. What does the filter cost over the Meijer Store, Farm Fleet discount store filter cost?

I figured no big deal just buy a bunch of Kia filters they recomend 5w-20w every 5000miles. The Kia filter was not expensive over any other brand & they do not insist that they change the oil just use their filter or warranty is void. 100,000 mile 10 year engine & trans warranty was a positive over all other auto OEMS. I'm also fine with Kia changing oil only problem is dealer is 100 miles away from the WI northwoods. Just wondered what other Kia owners were doing?

The Kia sales closing was soft sell sales person & business manager not on commission no hard sell BS better described as covering all the details about car care & details on monthly payment. Local Honda dealer was old school beat you up good cop / bad cop crap so we walked their loss & outdated sale approach. I guess each dealer is different.

The motive behind the sales person telling you that was to get you paranoid so you buy a Kia filter.

The oems and the dealers want a monopoly on your business so they will use methods and tactics to get you come back to them for all your service needs.

KIA filters are made by Dongwoo which is owned by Mann+Hummel

I know for a fact that it doesn't matter which OIL you use. Such is the case with snowmobiles, boats, cars, or whatever motor. The oil has to be compliant but you don't have to use a certain brand.

As for the filter, that may be different.

If it's a true bumper to bumper 100K mile warranty, I guess I'd probably buy the filters. Otherwise, I call BS on it. If not a true full warranty, I believe I'd use a reputable cross reference...Fram, Purolator, etc....if I needed to.

Purolator paper filter, a grocery store bargain filter is what did not work on the Subaru. I suspect if the filter hangs it will be fine but nowadays filter set upside down or sideways and need flow check valves in them. The days of PH25 or PH30 for chev.(fram) are long gone, so are affordable windshield wiper blades and one size fits all headlights.I will not mention Amsoil filters. (very happy with them).

Why anyone would skimp on an oil filter, the soul (no pun intended) thing that filters the lifeblood of your engine is beyond me. Same for those 10 minute oil change places, I've heard more horror stories coming out of those places, , , ,

Any way, I am 98.5% sure that if a dealer REQUIRES you to use THEIR filter and/or oil, they must supply it to you at no cost to you. It's a Federal Trade Comission thing.

Amsoil also has something about that on their website ( I quick looked but couldn't find it) and they make sure all their dealers know it. I am a dealer and I heard this many years ago. I even have a copy of the darn thing at home, , , somewhere. :)

Not a cost objection as Kia oil filter is not expensive. Just wondering what other Kia owners were doing for filters to NOT void 10 year 100,000 mile engine warranty? Also would not take the new Kia or any of our cars to 10 minute oil changers too risky & don't trust them.

Every American manufacturer has tried this process over time and lost in court. Now there is law covering this that protects the consumer. They can NOT require this...period...at least in the US of A.

Has anyone else read all the fine print when purchasing one of these "thro......cars?"

When you add up all the "routine" maint. they require to keep the warranty in effect, you might as well have purchased something bigger, better, safer....and so forth.

While these cars are cute....in the car business....they can be death beds. Wrap you daughter in lots of sheet metal until she gets to be a very experienced driver....

While these cute cars are tempting...those with more experience should do everything in their powers to move them away from "cute" to safer...until they get past the life taking stage of driving...if there ever is one of those stages.

A very good friend of mine was an assistant prosecutor...who always had to go do the "investigations" when there was a fatality in the middle of the night....and he said....always always always the small "cute" car, vw, nissan, whatever...was the "fatality" and the bigger car/truck was the walk away with a bandage over their eye...

So you have to ask yourself....is a few dollars of gas money worth it? Is cute really worth it? Life is choices we make at points in our lives which can have a profound affect on the outcomes we will ultimately have to live with.

Went underneath Soul this morning oil filter looks normal but can't look inside. The pan bolt right there too. Looks like very easy oil change. Take me 10 minutes to complete. I'll have to find out more about this oil filter.
