Hoping to head up this weekend and wondering if the bridge will be open to sleds? If so is the mat going to be down too? Thanks

Wanted to ask but know it will come in time. Would really like to take the kids up to Carmelitto's for lunch in Calumet. Know we can run the carbides on iron when bridge is down. Bu

The bridge has been lowered for some time now, however, not sure if it's open to traffic yet. The mat will come when there is enough to grab & dump on it, which shouldn't be long now. Steady snows the last couple of days. -Mezz

Unfortunately, you don't. Unless you can get someone local to haul your sleds for you.

The bridge is down and I believe the gates are open. As far as the mat goes, we have to wait for the Coast Guard to close the season for shipping on the Portage Waterway. For once the mat is down, the bridge cannot be raised because it is too heavy for the counter weights to be effective. The CG typically calls the end of the season towards the end of December. Once the mat is down, it will be advertised. Always is!

Nope, gates were still up this past weekend. We were told they’re still doing maintenance on the bridge this week and it might be open Thursday, unsure if they’d have the mat down or you’d just have to ride across the metal.

I just got this off of the Keweenaw info site. Looks like we'll be good to go by the time we get up there, just hoping when they say "open to snowmobile traffic " that means mat down and snow on it.

December 18, 2019:

Trails are being groomed day and night in most areas of the Keweenaw. Trails are in fair to good condition. Groomers are heading as far south as Toivola and to Copper Harbor via Trail 3 out to High Rock Trail. Trails 122 & 124 are being groomed today. The Portage Lift Bridge will be open to snowmobile traffic starting on December 19th.

Trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden and the Freda Trail (south of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge) will be closed the entire season for repair.
Trail 133 is closed until a reroute can be found.
Trail 134 “Mandan Trail” is temporarily closed due to logging.
Please stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely. The signs on the trails are there for rider’s safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.
