No more ETec outboards. Yamaha and Merc too much for them according to news release. People don't like filling oil even if it is just a little bit.
Hated to see this and blaming on Covid is an excuse to exit 2s outboard engines. Evinrude has been for sale for many years no one wanted it. Does this effect the future of etec snowmobiles or completely separate market? Rather ironic since etec started with outboards.

I really don’t think it will affect snowmobiles, with the weight of boats what is the true value of a 2s? Boat is the first place I want a 4s snowmobile I still think 2s is the way to go. BRP wanted etec from the beginning just had to buy outboard line to get it. IMO.
I talked to a guy fishing in my channel the other day. Big evinrude on the back. I said something about them not building outboards any longer. He was told that they are going to be making their motors electric. He said he has used their motors for alot of years. He seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I guess we'll see.

Actually this could make a lot of sense. Electric motors on the water would be great. Cheaper and lighter batteries on the way. Let it solar charge all week and run it for two days on the weekend.
I know battery technology has come a very long way but I would think an outboard, especially one with any sort of real horsepower would have to have one **** of a battery pack, knowing how much fuel they use considering the constant load they are under when under power, my boat is an inboard so I know not comparison to out board but with that approaching gallons per mile when under full power, and the days of water skiing and tubing it wasn't uncommon to blast through 20 plus gallons of fuel in an afternoon with our Johnson outboard, will be interesting if electric is the future but wonder how they will get over the load and the power need as the only time the boat is coasting is when its at idle. I would think the amp hours of the battery you would need would be enormous. I will say I was completely shocked at the news as they has some pretty neat technology.

I don't know if it would necessarily be an outboard. It surely wouldn't have to have all those moving parts. It might be integrated in to the whole design of the boat. Maybe a jet drive. Or a tunnel drive. ?????? My boat holds 150 gallons of gas. That is 1200 lbs. Plus the weight of the tanks themselves. I don't know how much the 454 weighs. Probably another 1000. That could be a lot of batteries. I don't know. Maybe would not work for speedboat type waterski/wakeboard boats. But for others it might work OK. Kind of exciting.
in the same boat (no pun intended) big block, but only have 100 gallon tank, when I run to Milwaukee and back,4600 rpm I'm sure the 4 barrels are WIDE OPEN and if I ride up and down river a couple times that's almost 3/4 tank of fuel round trip, going to be a long time before batteries replace that. Driving in car would be much cheaper but not as much fun.
