Coming up this friday for the weekend to Calumet with the wife and we would like to do some hiking. How bad, if at all, are the bugs in the woods right now? Down here in Green Bay the mosquitos are terrible.
All depends where exactly you're at and what the weather is doing IME. Here at my house the skeeters are terrible in the evening if the winds are calm (luckly by the lake its rarely calm). I've been in the woods places near Twin Lakes and South Range recently where there haven't been hardly any bugs during those times, also been other places UP that way where the bugs are still chasing you out of the woods....
My cousin took his wife to Marquette County for the first time and they took several wooded walks and he said no flies could be found. Of course they did not do much sunset walking. The drought no doubt and lack of free standing water other than the big lake means that they don't have many great places to breed.
Mid August, all of September up to mid October is prime summer time in the Peninsula. You can even swim in the biggest clearest deepest lake in North America.
So far almost the entire coast is there for the viewing and totally free of charge...a rare bargain these days.
Wondering about berries and birds? Any upswing in the grouse population?
