I am looking at buying a sled from Michigan and registering the sled in Illinois. The seller said that Michigan does not title the sleds. What would I need from the seller to properly title the snowmobile in Illinois.

Also, Does Illinois tax the sale when I register? If so How much.

Thanks in advance.

Illinois does not charge tax on used sleds. if its new, that is a whole nother can of worms. when buying new, you pay the tax in Michigan. then in Illinois you should pay the difference if Illinois is higher tax, depending on where you live exactly. as for paperwork needed for reg., if its used, the bill of sale written out by hand and the old registration is all you'll need. if its new, they want to know if the taxes have been paid. then you should get the title of origin from the dealer.

I did this a couple of years ago. If you buy from a dealer, you will get taxed when you register it with the IL Dept of Conservation. The tax is figured just like sales tax and you would get credit for the trade-in, if applicable. So, if the sled was $9000 and you got a trade-in allowance of $2,000 you would pay tax on the net of $7,000. You would also get credit for any sales tax you paid in the state of purchase.

If you bought a used sled from a private party the tax is nominal, like a flat $25.

Illinois Tax Information

Here is the information from the Illinois DNR website. Note the second to last line.
Also here is the webpage I pulled it from. It has more information. http://dnr.state.il.us/admin/snow.htm#Tax
Hope this helps.

*Tax Requirement on Snowmobiles (Forms for snowmobile use tax are multi-part (carbon) forms and cannot be faxed or downloaded. Forms are generally obtained from dealerships or currency exchanges. If you need to obtain the form prior to registering your snowmobile, you can request copies to be mailed to you by calling the Illinois Department of Revenue's 24-hour Forms Order Hotline at 1-800-356-6302.
Q. What is my tax obligation when I apply for title or registration in Illinois?

A. At the time you apply for an Illinois title or registration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for a snowmobile you purchased or leased, you are required to submit either payment of tax or proof that no tax is due before your snowmobile can be titled or registered.

The Illinois Department of Revenue is responsible for administering the collection of tax and providing the necessary tax forms. You must make separate payments for tax due and title and/or registration fees. Make your tax payment payable to the Illinois Department of Revenue and your payment for title/registration fees payable to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Note: Failing to title or register the item does not prevent the Department of Revenue from imposing the tax due on the purchase.

Q. Which forms are used for paying Illinois tax on snowmobiles?

A. One of two forms must be used to pay tax or prove that no tax is due:

Form RUT-25, Use Tax Transaction Return, due no later than 30 days after the date the snowmobile is brought into Illinois or the date of purchase from an out-of-state dealer or retailer, lending institution, or leasing company selling at retail.

Form RUT ST-556, Sales Tax Transaction Return, due no later than 20 days after the date of delivery of the snowmobile if purchased from an Illinois dealer or leasing company

Do NOT file a tax form if you purchased a snowmobile from an individual or private party
Note: For More detailed information, refer to the instructions provided with each return.

Is there a reason that it cannot remain registered in MI ? Just a thought that may save ya from buying trail tags every year. I live in IA but my sleds are registered in WI so at least I only hafta buy one set of out of state permits. Kinda adds up on 3 or 4 sleds.

Michigan requires everyone, residents as well as nonresidents, to purchase trail permits.
Also, if you live in Illinois and your sled is not registered in Illinois and if you are using the trails in Illinois and you are stopped by the DNR you will be ticketed.

tax is a 1/4 or a 1/2 % less in Mi, If you don't ride trail in Il than yes, you would pay less to register in Mi. I lived in Il for 43 years and the last 2 in Mi. I always bought in Mi and registered in MI. The trails are crap most the time in Il and you break a lot of stuf with low snow cover, why bother.

Lenny, just curious, where did you live in Illinois? I am in Morrison about 15 miles east of Clinton Iowa. Sorry to hijack the thread but tried to PM you and it is not allowed.

Born and raised in Aurora, moved a bit south to Norway and than Here in Greenland Mi. Sorry if it sounded like i was bashing IL riding. Not bashing it, just didn't do much for me. I did ride in IL but mainly ditch banging and farm field fence row drifts. Busted a lot of stuff in IL

Maybe not enough of the story was posted by me. I live in IA but don't ride here so by registering in WI all I have to buy is non-res tags for MI so I am able to save buying the non-res tags for both states. In WI the resident is something like $30 for 2 years as opposed to $35 for a 1 year non-res tag so kinda like getting two years for the price of one.
