Calumet to Silver City

Coming up with a group next week and was wondering how far is the trip from Calumet to Silver City area? Have some rookie riders and I don't want to over do it the first day. Also, are all the trails open around Mass City, Greenland area? I know there has always been pretty good trails along those areas, like trail 13 and the Freda loop.
thanks,

That's an awful lot for rookies that have never been on a grade. Where is your base?

Agreed.
Getting continually passed when driving at a rookies pace on the grade is unnerving. Plus, there is that trail that goes along highway 64 that never has snow on it due to the proximity to Lake Superior; yuk.
Maybe just stick between Gogebic and Silver City if your base is near Gogebic. Or, if you are out of Calumet stay north of the Bridge, or at least north of Rockland to Sidnaw.

Yep exactly what I was thinking too. Ride up to LOC then circle SC, Bergland and White Pine. LOC view will knock the socks off a rookie and that entire area will have deep snow. Base from Kontecka and work north give them a taste of a grade see if they can maintain grade speed so thee don't get blown off by grade traffic. If basing out of Calumet stay in the Kewee ride all the trails branch out to the Freda loop enjoy crossing the bridge. Tired of that work east to Lanse, and Mount Arvon and U turn back.

Take a rookie to the Keeweenaw. Much more scenic. More places to stop and rest. We have been staying in Silver City since the 26th, not a groomer in site except for the one in Ontonagon covered in a foot of snow. Not a happy bunch of sledders in this area this week.

That's a shame. They just can't get it together up there.

No groomers running but their right there to take your $48 for a sticker. Plus the state money they get . Getting old for sure

I agree that sucks but don't forget how cold its been the last few days. Those temps are hard on equipment and could be dangerous for the volunteers that drive them.

Yep, everyone has different levels of what they are comfortable with in terms of working themselves and equipment in the cold. I'm home in WI for the holidays and we would have been pretty hesitant to take out equipment in the temps we've had. Unlike here where there are road crossings every mile, the U.P. has areas with little to no cell service and no road crossings for miles.

our base is out of calumet, centennial cottage. i will absolutely consider the experience of the riders when choosing where to go. hopefully the trails settle down and are able to get properly and safely groomed.
thanks for the information. stay warm and be safe.

We just got back from riding the keeweenaw. We based in Houghton and rode south to Henry's on day 1 (12/29), north to Copper Harbor on day 2 (12/30) and North to Lac La Belle on day 3 (12/31). I would tell you to keep it north of Centennial cottage as the conditions were good. But as others have said, be prepared for cold and little cell service. We saw 4 groomers. Trails were well groomed on day 3. Don't go to Gay unless the trail is groomed. It wasn't when we tried. Went 3 miles and turned around.
