Yup. You have to go around the Indian reservation between Hurley and Ashland and the trail around Duluth is a pain but it certainly can be done. As far as miles it just depends on your route. There is a corridor trail from Ashland to Superior that burns up the Wisconsin part of the trip in about an hour and one half.

Heck ya, Grub has it right, Hurley south to Park Falls, west on the Tascobia, up towards Ashland, thru Superior and then around Duluth to the North Shore Trail ( a slight pain), but then go all the way to the casino (cheap) at Grand Portage. On the way back take the swampers trail up to the Gunflint and then the Expressway back to the North Shore trail. Have fun those trails are Super all the time.

As far as the MN side if it were me I would ride from Superior to Moose lake to Grand Rapids on the corridor trail. If there is snow you can make some good time there. Usually groomed up really nice. From Grand Rapids go northeast on the Taconite Trail until you get to the NST. Once you get there you are home free. One neat thing about that area is that no matter how cold it is you are close enough to Superior (which usually doesn't freeze) so the lake warms things up. The last time I was there it was about -30 but the closer we got to the lake it warmed up about 30 degrees. Kind of weird. If you took the route I described I would guess the mileage one way would be in the 4-5 hundred mark but I really don't remember that close. The trails I described would have the best chance of being in good shape. You would see some country.

Check that - You would be on a goat trail about 40 miles between corridor 2 and Grand Rapids. It is groomed but it is twisty and you won't make much time there. That would be the only sucky part of the ride.
