Can we replace just the Chain?

A Freind of mine has a 98 ZL500 Cat, Chain tensioner is at its end. No more adjustment. We ran it this way last year with out a failure. It does have the spring assembly across the chain to keep the slack out. The gears look like they are in great shape.
I know this going to probably stir up a tizzy.
But I am looking for some knowledgeable responses.

Should be no problem with chain replace only. with auto tensioner and a manual one. Its more for if your are jumping off the ground with the power on helps keep tension better when landing. If your easy on your sled and dont have studs will proly go 1000's more miles. a lot of people use a wrench on the bolt stretch the chain too much when setting

If your question is do you need to replace the gears when the chain is replaced, no. Last two sleds I owned had chain replaced 4 times before I changed the top gear. And these sleds (800t & 1000t) were a little harder on a chain than a 500

The photo shows a '99 w/ reverse with the new 4th chain, all original gears, although the center and top show some wear. The roller on the auto tensioner was replaced.

I have a 550 zl and I dropped a tooth on the small gear. My chain tensioner is maxed out. It has been that way for years.
