About Chased me right out of the u p this weekend unbelievable. 100% deet doesn't stop them. I had to put rubber bands around my pants so they couldn't crawl up my legs. as much as I don't like head nets it's about time to put them on.

It can't be possible. The Canadian border is closed. Perhaps the Mich governor will get a cease and desist order against these vagabond flies. How dare they violate the law.

We try and keep in under wraps, so most folks don't know, but around 40 tourists go missing every season due to these. All that is left is their bloodless corpses. Only way to stay safe from them is to douse yourself in gasoline and set yourself on fire.

They just lick the deet off you as an appetizer before going for their blood meal.

I believe it might be because we are still numb from the 8 months of winter we just endured. :)

I've said this before and will say again, all the earlier exploriers, must have been tuff folks to endured them insects they had tio deal with while exploring

I know I have spent my share of hours out on and in the tundra when things were nasty, and couldn;t imagine NOT having a good bug suit/bug net, just the sounds alone after a while will drive one batty! , never l\mind all thge bites and blood loss !

and to anyone looking for a GREAT bug suit, that is LIGHT and about as cool as possible to wear
the Shannon Bug Tammer Plus, suit, is the best I have found and there better than most bya LOT
there double layer mesh, that things cnanot get to you, and you can wear short under them and stay cool

there only flaw I have is I wish they came in colors other than camo and olive green
I have talked to the owner a few times, saying he is missing a LOT of sales only targeting hunters
when I think a TON of summer folks would love to have them in lighter colors they could wear in more places and not look like a Rambo want a be!

SO
just a FYI, if anyone wants to HAS to be outside in places where things are nasty , these suits are worth every penny and then some.

the parka is what I have(has built in head netting) but I also have there pants and gloves, 2 complete suits.
I have kicked the idea about of trying to bleach one to a more white color, but have not done so YET.
here is a link if anyone cares!

10 seconds after I put on the deet, a couple landed on my hand! Bloodthirsty evil little things they are! Lol.

By Monday they were getting better. One good thing is they only last a couple weeks then the No see ums and Mosquitos start.

Every year I spend 4th of July north of the Lake and come back all bit up. Last Friday was as bad as July 4th in Ontario.

We were at our cabin on the north shore and they were awful! Right by the lake was fine but get a couple miles inland and it sucked.

according to my township a new mosquito born virus is being detected in wisconsin, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, one of the most severe mosquito-transmitted diseases in the U.S. there is no vaccine or preventative drug for EEE!!! maybe mandatory netting should be used to stop the spread. i already know midwest player is a much better provocateur than i, so hats off to him.

The best advice is to remain calm and don't panic and they bite very little.

Most people go crazy because they are in your face so bad but still, just remain calm and they'll leave you alone.

However the best thing is to not come to the UP and the bugs won't bother you. :)

The good news is the black flies mostly disappeared almost overnight (pending a second hatch, of course)...the bad news the freaking skeeters are out in full fury...fargin bastages...

If you think they don't bite, you were not anywhere near my Camp last weekend.

I had over 50 bites on my legs under my Jeans last Friday. Then I rubber banded my Jeans like I do in Ontario and that stopped that. 100% Deet behind my Ears did help.

I may have run into a Nest of them clearing out my Trails from the Ice Storm last Winter.

I can put up with the Bugs, its better than all the Tourists in N WI.

The onset of the blackie is pretty bad and deet does nothing.

But when I use to go brook trout fishing up in Canada the owner of the lodge gave me that advice about remaining calm it also try to keep cool and don't exert yourself. He told us this as he had a zillion if them buzzing around him but really not biting.

In two weeks they are gone for the season.
