As of this year there is no way to get to Marathon or Nipigon from Thunder Bay by trail.

We ride north of International Falls and ride two tracks, logging roads, lakes and the now the unmaintained portion of the OFSC trail. I have a friend that has a off the grid cabin we base out of when we go up there.

Thanks oldguy. We tried to get through from Marathon to Thunder Bay in 2008, and were unable to do so even late in the season. That area is really, really, rugged terrain. Gorges and tall climbs out of them! I have been told not able to do so ever since 2007. OFSC took funding and grooming equipment away from that area due to low permit sales. That is why it is so important to buy permits where you ride. The great northern loop ride went away at the same time, for that same reason. They had riders, but permits not bought in the area they rode. So easy to just by permits at the Soo. It was a shame as to the absolute beauty of that part of Ontario. Really disappointing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still in hope it will return. Any other info would be appreciated.

Yes sir polarisrider1. Don't forget the "burger"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The western trail absolutely beautiful ride. We so much want to be able to go west out of Marathon to Thunder Bay, or north on the old great northern loop. some of the best riding you'll ever find. It's the "adventure" of it!

That was District 16 and you are correct that it folded. Not only a problem with trail pass sales, but also a problem with volunteers. The clubs folded and some of that equipment went to District 17 (above Minnesota). I agree that it was a real shame.

As for the original question, we rode the big loop starting near Winnipeg and riding over to Kenora, down to Fort Francis, over to Atikokan, up to Sioux Lookout, back to Kenora, and back to Winnipeg. Took us 6 days and we covered about 1200 miles. I think we saw less than 20 sleds the whole time.

Great trails and hospitality in Canada.
