Cannister gets hot

My grandson ZR 600 cannister gets very hot, even to the point that the cowling along side of it has worped a little, even the other day when I was riding it there was a small fire under it, threw a little snow on it and it was OK. Sled runs just fine, a friend told me that there is probably a mouse nest in the cannister, so I replaced the cannister, still have the same problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks Bill

This is a carb model , mileage is around 10 miles per gallon about normal for a 600. The old cannister looked normal, except fpr the bottom near the fire which was nearly white, from the heat.

A friend now tells me that these older 600s do have a problem with the balance of the crankshaft getting off which will cause a heating problem with the cannister, anybody ever here of this problem?
