Carb question for vintage sledders

Hey there guys, got a carb question to pose to you.

I am going to bring up a '68 ski doo oly 299 this year after winter break to bomb around on and take to the vintage show in Copper Harbor, but it needs a little rebuilding first. I have been having problems keeping the stock Tillotson carb tuned the way I want, and have been thinking about going to a Mikuni slide type. I have been advised however that a Oly rotax will shake a slide carb to death by rattling the floats 'till they beg for mercy.

In the past my father and I put a slide carb on a Kawasaki 440 (smooth running), and it runs really well now, which is why I would like to do the same on this ski doo.

Let me know what you guys think. The other option is to do a really detailed rebuild of the stock Tillotson and try to make it work like it should. I know people out there can make them work perfectly, but it is a challenge sometimes.

Thanks
-Jesse

Thanks for the links, but I have read tons of postings on other boards and it hasn't helped much. Most of the vintage guys I have run into on the web are into show sleds that are 100% correct or into racing and don't always care about all around running ability. I would be a little more interested in what you guys (That ride all the time) would say about it. I know you folks rode these sleds back in the day, and you must have wrenched on them. What worked?

I think skutr is right. From what I see on vintagesleds.com, they are not all just show sled guys. The majority of those guys ride their sleds, and spend a great deal of time getting them that way. That is the site I go to for vintage help.
