Carbide Length

Hey Guys
Snow is finally on its way to southeastern wi after only 288 snowless days (a new record for here and something I never want to witness again) so its that time of the year to get those last minute things ready for the sled to go have some fun which includes new carbides. I have a 2005 Polaris 900 fusion that is all stock with the exception of a rebuilt motor with wiseco racing pistons, I primarily do on trail riding around this area of the state with an occasion trip to the Eau Claire area which has very similar conditions just a few more lakes and the occasional ditch banging session around the house. What length carbide would you guys recommend?? I am torn between 4" or 6" and am pretty against the 8" as I have heard horror stories from people who have put those on thinking they would help their handling on our trail conditions. Any help would be greatly appreciated and think snow and cold!!!

By all stock, I presume you don't run studs. Normally 4" will be fine without studs. I bought a pair of dually 6" in error and ran them on a Polaris last year without studs. When I was on a ice covered road the front end kind of controlled the rear. It was a little hairy at times at higher speeds. I would stay away from 6" carbides without studs.

They usually recommend length of carbide by sled HP & the amount of studs. Look at the carbide manufactures website, some have charts for CCs & amount of studs. FYI-I have a 600xc & it has 120 studs and 6" carbides, I think it handles well. I would go with 6", a 900 with studs can handle it. But like RuppCollector said, with no studs, 4" is fine.

Don't go 4" with 900 & studs 6 or 8" would be my choice but I like agressive turning & you will need that in Kettle tight trails. Also remember carbides wear so handling you get when 1st installed diminishes with wear. If you have the bucks call Scott Bergstrom for triple points & ski savers.Scott will interview you & set you up right.

^^ X2^^ I'm sure you have at least 144 studs on a 900 so 6 or 8's for sure. Typically, when you go longer, it increases steering effort some. 6" duallys be good.

I went with the Bergstroms in 8" with no studs and couldn't be happier darting is almost gone and didn't have to buy new skis. I ride some tight trails in Jackson Co and before on factory 4" carbides it was pretty loose.
