Carpal Tunnel and Riding

I had carpal tunnel surgery this past summer, but just as I was told, I'm still having occasional shooting pains and soreness. The numbness and fatigue is gone, but I now have after suregery pains. I rode the quad a bit last week, and already feeling like I will be having pain when snowmobile season is here...anyone have similar issue and does anything help? See lots of products out there, but I have little faith.

My hands hurt all the time & wear 2 thumb things (old style) fits better under gloves. Back thing for back support over core protecter & 2 knee things. I'm like an old football player taped head to foot but still ride 350 mile days no problem. Whind me & I go

A little bit of pain is part of the game to me. Try thumb things they work.

Someone makes a duel throttle cable that mounts on the left side ,so you can switch from side to side while touring!

I'm like whitedust. I'm in constant pain. Broke my spine in 2 places 2 years ago and have 6 buldged disc along with spinal stenosis, spinal degeneration, and spinal arthritis. The spinal fractures caused permanent nerve damage in my left leg and my arms and hands are affected as well, same symptoms as carpal tunnel so I know what you're talking about. I can't do the 300 mile rides any more I have changed to off trail mostly so I can stop and take breaks when ever I need to without worrying about holding others up on the trail. Also now a 3-4 hour day off trail is all I need to satisfy me so I can go back to the cabin or hotel room and load up on Aleve and take a hot shower. I also use the Back Thing, my Carol Davis Body suit has tight spandex cuffs that have a thumb hole so this helps almost as well as the thumb things. I'm 48 and I'll take the pain in trade for snowmobiling, just can't seem to give it up.

megan600,
I had the same surgery that you had a couple winters ago and I wasn't able to ride for two months. Once I was able to go, after 100 miles it was really sore. They can give u all the rehab they want but snowmobiling or 4-wheeling is not one of them so it will just take time. Unless you are riding in snowcross, it will get better over time and try to put ice on it when you are done. Where they cut my hand it what was really sore so found a big enough glove and wore the brace while riding. it took a very long time for my hand to get back to 100% but it is pain free.

Man, you guys are in rough shape...

Wonder if you can buy, or make, something like the gymnasts wear when they perform on the parallel bars. They have a hook in the palm of your hand, so that when you grip, you are over the hook, but the pressure of the pulling and griping is actually transfered back to your forearm with a sleave and strap system. Might be a little dangerous if you have to bail off the sled and can't unhook, but might help the hanging on part.

frnash - duel but not "Whind". Being nice to whitedust? Actually, I enjoy reading your continued efforts to educate us on the poor use of spelling and vernacular in our virtual society these days. Good thing this isn't an IM or Twitter site. T9 on your phone for texting can mess a guy up good. You'd be crazy busy.....

Yeah, I guess I'm just takin' it easy on 'youse' guys!
Pytavey, I've never felt any pressure from "griping," said Tom, while wiping a tear on his "sleave" er… sleeve!

ah, good catch. I try, but in the end, I've become too dependent on spell-check myself....K

meagan600, I had Carpal tunnel and trigger thumb surgery on my right hand in 2005, takes a long time to get your strength back. Wear your braces every night that will help, I still wear mine. Start out with shorter rides and work your way up. I just had Rotator Cuff and tendon surgery on my right shoulder so I'm done until the end of Feb. at best.

Here I was thinking I was smart by having it done in the summer as to not conflict with riding season! Guess I better plan better for when the other hand needs done. Its amazing how much strength I lost. Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

wow , after hearing all these stories I will not have the surgery ajust deal with some numbness and keep dropping the wrenches . I never have problems riding quads or sleds , but dirt bike/street bikes just killed me . only able to do 15 min max on a dirtbike . I went as far as rigging a thumb throttle on my old kx 500, that was super wierd , didn't work out so bye-bye bikes ! only got to make it 10 more yrs with these hands , then its ice cold 12 oz curls allday everyday !

bellracing2, didn't even get on my Speed Triple this year, street bikes still kill me, dirt bikes aren't so bad. I think its because I'm moving more and changing postions all the time, but I seem to get arm pump more on my right arm(the one I hard surgery on) than the left. Been wrenching for a living for 30 years in one form or another it takes its tolls.

meagan600 my left hand has it too but I'm not gonna get the surgery done, wearing the brace's at night help's and I still have the strength.
