Central WI

I have been in the beautiful (but crazy) Pacific NW for the past 1-1/2 years and will be completing my duties out here by year end or early 2015. I have an opportunity in Central Wisconsin, north of Wausau and would prefer to live north of Merrill, but my wife would like to live south of Wausau closer to Mosinee. We are looking to buy/build on waterfront, either the Wisconsin River and/or tributary or flowage/lake.

I am not real familiar with this area but would appreciate any feedback for the above mentioned areas in terms of natural resource activities and overall quality of life. I am tired of moving, so this will be my retirement home/area.

Thank you in advance.

HH , i live just south of Mosinee and love this area . Lake Du Bay is pretty popular in this area . Snowmobiling is nice here with good trail systems and excellent clubs . The only thing that is some what of a pain is trying to find a way to cross the Wisconsin river from east to west on a sled without trailering . Hope this helps .

The WI river is not Vilas county lakes that is for sure. We researched the entire state of WI for lake front & quality lakes start Tomahawk & north. Lake Genvea & Lauderdale lakes are nice in Walworth county but not affordable tax wise when retired & why I left. Shopping is good in Rhinelander lots of big box stores & the good trail snow starts there as well anywhere south central from Rhinelander is iffy for rideable snow. If you like the northwoods water you have to come north just the way it is. Lots of man made lakes in Rome area but water level dropes as dam is adjusted per season same in Red Granite area.

I was born in Tomahawk. My family relocated in the Oshkosh area for a number of year due to work. I moved back a few years out of high school. Best move I ever made!! There is so much to do in the area. Too much to list. Start looking now and you are sure to find a nice place to hang your hat. I don't know how proper it is to solicit work on this site but if you want to build I would be very interested in giving you a quote. Hey, it's worth a try.

We will be examining all options, what is the name of your company?

We've had our cabin in Rhinelander for 30+ years and love the area! The area has so much to offer. There is always a lake front home for sale on our chain of lakes. A lot of growth has occurred with the big boxstores like Whitedust mentioned but makes shopping easier. Good Luck!

Did you end up building or buying existing?

I will put in a plug for the Hayward/Cable area. In the last year I purchased a cabin on Lake Namekagon and love it. 30 minutes to Hayward, 30 min to Ashland for shopping. Easy to get goods and services, plenty of social activities in the area. Snowmobiling is great, as well as fishing. I would look into Namekagon, Round Lake, Chippewa Flowage, Grindstone, and others in the area. Tons of options.

We bought an unfinished spec home in 2004 on Spectacle Lake then completed it to flip it but then the market took a dive so we settled in to live here. 5 bedroom 4 bath 3 car garage 3 acre lakefront house way too big for us but as new as you can get up here. My understanding of current northwoods market is most distressed homes have been sold but buyers won't accept seller higher pricing so the market has locked up for now. Sellers not willing to accept low ball pricing & many still underwater & forcing prices up. Right now it is a buyer /seller standoff so not much happening but eventually prices will go up a lot in the next year as sellers & banks hold the price line. Probably still can find a deal on a used lake front home but new homes are very expensive to build & again although buyers want new they won't pay for new. Prices are going up & bottom is long gone.

Agree Hayward area lakes very very nice too but that area is the twin cities playground for the most part which is not a bad thing but too far from IL & southern WI family when compared to Vilas northwoods drive time.

I've been in the construction trades for 25 years. I have been on my own for 10 years.
I don't have a lot of overhead so I feel like I can be competitive.
I also subcontract with the Wausau Homes dealer in the area.

Give me a call if you would like some info about the area or try tomahawkchamberofcommerce.com

Whitedust, I recently purchased frontage on Spectacle and thus far, am impressed with what I see. We have not built yet, still in the clearing phase.
3.4 A, 300ft. Love the clear water and the privacy of the lot and area. Highhertel this is a bit of a drive to Wausau though but I suspect if you can stay close to the HWY 51 corridor, you can be North a good distance.

Living off the main roads like where we are slows you down if you want to get somewhere. Always have to wait for the roads to clear of the bear, deer, eagles ect. (exageration)

Yep you come here for the clear lake water and the privacy 17 miles door to door to Trigs. I know exactly where you are...I'm on the same Spectacle in log home across the lake from NSC. Sometimes I cut thru the woods by the pines & ride home on the lake right before your lot. I'll PM you.
