Chassell to Houghton

Hey guys....hoping some of you guys that are local or know the trails well can help me out. We are coming up for Copper Dog and rented a house between Baraga and Chassell off of UP15. I understand there is not a direct trail from Chassell up to Houghton and people generally navigate Chassell Painesdale Road to get over to Painesdale and then up from there. Is there enough traffic that this is self explanatory? And is that road plowed to pavement, or do they leave the shoulder set up for sleds? Any other "local" options? Wanting to make sure we are not trespassing and so any help you guys can provide is much appreciated.

Run the portage. Used to all the time and I would today if I was up there. Just keep moving you'll be fine. We used to hook back onto land on the South side by Super 8 or North side use the marina by the bridge.

Get on the Portage Canal right behind the gas station in Chassell, it runs you right up to Houghton, stay by the shoreline , there is tons of tracks and not dangerous at all , will take you bout 10 minutes.

Its unfortunate that the old railway easement is in the legal mess that it is. Yes it goes through people's yards but everyone that bought property on the lake is aware that when they bought their property that was not their property.
Now people have even built across the old easement to block it off.
A lot of it washed away during our big Father's day storm last year too.
What a mess.
