Fireplace doors at the GF house have never been cleaned and because I am going for boyfriend of the year I'm gonna do it. Was thinking of oven cleaner. Any better ideas?

Merry Christmas y'all!

Good lord don't use oven cleaner will burn your skin & stink you out of the house no idea what it would do to FP door glass & her enclosure. What you need is Rutland Glass Cleaner #84 made for FP door glass cleaning. Ace sells or can buy on line buy 2ea 8 oz bottles. Get a big paperbag & lots of damp paper towels & start rubbing probably will take an hour to get it cleaner if really super blackened. Good luck GF will be happy with ya stuff works.

Wet a paper towel and put some of the ashes on the towel and scrub window then clean with another wet towel then dry if it is real bad might that a couple tries been cleaning mine this way for 10 years and have never used anything else!

Take doors off and lay dirty side up. Spray enough simple green on them that the burnt on gunk is covered. Let soak for 15 min and come back with razor blade and towel (that you don't want to keep) and clean up super easy.

What goofy said. I burn a ton of wood. I take a page of news paper. Wet it and dip it in cold ashes. Rub the glass with it a couple of times if needed. Wet another page and rinse the glass. Wipe down window with a dry page. Two minutes and comes out perfect.

Oven cleaner does work, I have used it. But spray on the towel, and apply. If you spray on the glass and the over spray to the doors will remove the paint. Then I used windex to clean the final film. Takes about 10 minutes. But now I was given hearth and door cleaner works great.

I must be missing something here, or people just like working harder than they need to?? Whats wrong with just scraping the soot off the glass with a razor blade? Just like scraping paint or a sticker off a piece of glass. Very easy to do, without mixing up homemade concoctions and what not.

Thanks everyone! I'll get it done today and get my boyfriend of the year points before the 31st. Then off to Bergland with my buddy!

Wow! That was easy. I thought it would be all caked on like an oven. Just bought some stuff at the hardware store and it wiped right off.

Put new sheets on the bed, too, so I am golden!
