Clearing snow off of roof??

I have an older rambler home with either a 3/12 or 4/12 pitch roof. Its pretty easy to get up there and easy to walk around on it. We just got somewhere around 18" of snow, plus 8 or so from a previous storm. I got up there today to clear off the vents so that the attic can breathe, shoveled off some parts that were deep. Just wondering how many people are concerned with snowload/ roofs collapsing etc. I don't want to end up like the Metrodome. My neighbor tells me that if you clear it off, do the whole thing because if the rafters are loaded unevenly with snow it can cause more problems than good. The main back part of the house might have 3 feet maybe more on it in places, a huge drift formed on it.

I was just thinking there should be plenty of people on here that live in the UP or other places more accustomed to big snowfalls like this. Whats your take? Leave it, clear it, partially clear it? The snow is pretty light and powdery.

Clear it, your better off to get at now than wait. I'm not sure where the home is located, but, if you have had any early wet snows or snow that got rained on, it will weigh quite a bit & be deceiving to look at it. I would think at this point weight load is not a pressing issue, but, it won't take long to accumulate. Besides, it's easier to move it before it collects too much.-Mezz

You should ask the people at the Metrodome for tips... I heard they are the best at roof snow removal.

the news said they where using hot water to try and clear the snow. Huuumm using water to clear frozen water. Probably would have worked for a small amount of snow/ice but not 16" of snow.
