Closest OPEN trails to Portage County?

Have my 12 year old son up for the week, looking for the closest place to take a trail ride, without staying over night somewhere.

I see Portage, Marathon and Waupaca county trails are still closed. Anything not too far open?

Adams Cty is open. Just head southwest a little and you can ride. Plainfield truck stop could be a take off spot. Not sure how the trails will be, but they are open last I saw.

Plainfield is in Waushara county. That particular stop won't work, but looking east from there possibly. Just nothing open close to Steven's Point the way it looks.

Try this website, http://www.travelwisconsin.com/snow_report.aspx , and click on the Snowmobile tab in the middle of the page. It shows which counties are open and what the conditions are.

Also, I heard that trails around Amherst (south of the Tomorrow River Trail) will be opened some time on Thursday to allow for sledding to/from the Portage County Ice Wars.

Hey, that would be the ticket! I live just north of Amherst, and could easily ditch it to there.

Just called the Portage County Snowmobile Trail Conditions hotline (715-343-6277). The recording says some trails in zone 4 may open later in the week. Keep trying the hotline for updates.

Got word from the guys plowing the parking area for the Portage County Ice Wars, that they plan to open some trails Thursday, guess we'll see how that goes, and hope we get a couple inches out of this next little splash......
