Clutch Engagement.......

On my 2000 Mach Z 800 Triple I have noticed that the clutch is making a slight "bang?" when its engaging. Im not sure if "bang" is the right word to use but I can hear it when its just starting to engage.. like pulling away from a stop sign. Any ideas on whats causeing this? The clutch works fine otherwise and the sled pulls fantastic etc etc. Am pretty sure the cltch is all stock..bought the sled used but wasnt told of any clutch mods. Has about 3100 miles on it. Let me know what you think......Thanks!

Swap a new belt on it (or try your spare). Good chance its that. Then confirm alignment and deflection are good (1/8" above sheaves). Lastly, check all your motor mounts and torque arm if you have one.

If the secondary spring is getting weak, it can roll back at stops. The clutch will sometimes clunk as the secondary clutch pads come in contact with the foreward helix angle. You can simualte it on the stand by accelerating the track, braking, and throttling up again. You may be able to isolate the clunk, but not as well as being on the snow as the added drag and weight of the sled can affect the severity of the clunk. You need to determine if it is the primary or secondary clutch. Also, check the drive chain tension, it should be as tight as you can get it by hand, then back off to fit the pin. The adjuster should move by hand, if not, try backing it off to make sure it moves freely. If not, you need to figure out why. If the chain is too loose, it will slap in the case. And the track drive sprockets may slap into the drive lugs, causing a clunk sound.

Ok. I dont think it is/was the belt. Was doing it on tues when I was out and then blew a belt. Put my new spare BRP belt on and it still did it. Its not from the chain being loose either. I just changed the chaincase oil a month ago and checked the chain tension and adjusted it properly. If I had to bet its coming from the primary. Also just replaced the engine mount tensioner this fall and the rubber bumper that is part of it. How tight should that be?? Should that allow any engine movement??

The bumper should be up against the crankcase, no space between them. Probably should disassemble the primary, look for bushings in the center worn unevenly, or any unusual were marks. Also check all the engine mounts, might have one split or broken in some way, allowing the motor to move around.
