Cougar Tracks

Its hard to see in the picture but above the camera is a track.

My grandpas brother swears that he seen a cougar this summer. No one really believed him because he's old and you know how nobody believes old people are. Well yesterday my uncles neighbor (good family friend) said he seen it working along the fence row so my uncle went out this morning and found its tracks. There putting out some road kill and the trail cam to see if they can catch anything on it. There are so many deer around here that I don’t know why it would eat road kill but were hoping that it will come by to investigate it and catch a pic of it. If the news wasn’t coming from my uncle I wouldn’t believe it but he has hunted pretty much everything throughout the states so he knows his stuff. Crazy!

This past July, my mom and I were headed to the hospital around midnight one o'clock. We were on the road by our house and rounded the bend and I yelled Deer, Deer, Deer! and then I said that wasn't a deer it was too low to the ground and not as brown. We pulled onto the shoulder and hit the brights and saw it walking into the woods. I said that wasn't a wolf it was a cougar.

The next morning we called the DNR and let them know what we saw. We got a call back from the game warden and he told us basically we were crazy there are not any cougars in the area.

There are however cougars in the area that have transmitters and a bunch of horses and livestock have been attacked. We later found out we were right and the ones with transmitters had babies and have gone out on their own and because they don't have transmitters the DNR has no way of knowing. The DNR does not seem like they want admit that there are cougar in the area.

Cougars can be found wherever deer roam, from Canada to Mexico. I once had an argument with an english teacher who told me I was crazy for writing that my folks had seen one in the Northwoods. I brought him several photocopied pages from encylopedias and text books that explained to him why he was an english professor and not a wildlife expert. I also refused to remove my words from the assignment. Sighthings are rare because the population is low and they are stealthy creatures that do not survive by being seen. Awesome pic!

What is really funny is the the MDNR says they are rare - don't exhist, but in the deer regs. it states that you can't shoot them.

I talked with my uncle last night and they dont have any pics off the trail cam yet. We finally just got enough snow to cover the ground so maybe we'll get some movement now.
