Crossing the Bridge between Houghon and Hancock on a ATV

Was just looking at the trail map and I noticed it say that "all non street legal vehicles must have a police escort to mcross the portage lift bridge". So is a ATV considered a non street vehicle? Will I have to have a police escort at the listed times? Or how do we cross from the north to the south while on a ATV? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but the ATV stuff is new to me, been sledding up here for 20 plus years so sled stuff i have down pat!

Thanks in advance

yes you need an escort, I'm pretty sure there are signs at the bridge with a # you can call for the escort and they are on the mi-trale map too. Just need to plan ahead

Call Houghton Police on Houghton side, call Hancock Police on Hancock side. They will instruct you where to ride and they will lead the way. Those whom I have talked to say its a piece of cake, officers are good to deal with.

Do not attempt it without, you have to ride the roadway on the bridge and drivers drive crazy crossing it changing lanes and speeding.

I was just thru there about 1 hr ago. That bridge has to be one of the most dangerous places to drive in this area. Every time I drive there I see some idiot do something foolish like the am. On the Houghton side loop, I was in center lane and car on my right crossed my lane to the far left lanes with no signal. I was back of him and gaining on him when he just veered to the far left to take the Marquette exit. I bet he has no idea he almost hit me, less than 10 ft from contact.

When I call, do they just come out if they are not busy? Or are there only certain times they help with the crossing?

They prefer certain times

9:15 am
1:15pm
6:15pm

That should be on the map...if you have a Mi-TRALE map..
