How do you register a sled built from scratch?

Let's say you bought different parts from many different people that parted sleds and made a sled.

How do you register the sled without their name showing up in the DNR database etc....

Do you cut out the serial number on the chassis and replace it with one given to you or some made up one?

In Michigan, as long as you use the tunnel number, the name of the last registered owner and place a value on it not a problem. If they run the VIN and it comes back to someone other than who you gave them, they need to send it to Lansing to check on leins that may have been placed on it. ( new this year) Its getting a little tougher to register vintage sleds each year.
