Cylinder heat gauges.

I have two 550 fan cool sleds, ones in rebuild right now.
Thinking of adding a cylinder heat gauges to my sled.
Are they worth the money?
Where would you find the temps to go by?
Or would an exhaust gage be better?

Thanks,

What is your concern? Melting pistons or overheating the head/cylinders? Air cooled motors take a beating from all the extreme temp change expansion/contraction. EGT is usually air/fuel related.

with those sleds I would not waste the money, but instead use that money to make sure that everything else is ok=clean carbs, good fuel,ect... egt gauges and the likes can be very hard to read when your riding. give us some more details as to what led up to this=old gas? warm day of riding? carbs dirty?

Do they even make such an animal?

If I were going to keep track of how things are doing down there, I would go for the exhaust gas temp and try and avoid a melt down about to happen. Unfortunately, most 2 smokers on fan only deal with this after the melt down and rebuild of the engine. But seems like this would give you piece of mind as you run down the trail and see where the temp is at. If it creeps up there over time, it would tell you that it is time to re-do the carbs and boots and prevent the melt down before it happens.
Too lean, means a burnt down machine.
