Going across the Big Mack last night the escorts were mandatory. First time for me... The waves were huge from what we saw!

It looks like an extended power outage at da eastern tip o' da Keweenaw too, including Copper Harbor. ZIP 49918, 75 customers affected, still out as I write.

Also still out: ZIP 49950 (Fulton, Mohawk, Eagle River (MI), Central, Bete Gris) 27 customers; ZIP 49984 (Shingleton, Melstrand), 21 customers.

Click for a report of UP Power Co. current electric outages, updated every 15 minutes.

Well Copper Harbor is alive and well once again. Sharon Smith reports (in her September 4 Journal) having to drive to the top of Brockway with her cell phone to make an emergency phone call, since the AT&T land lines were out, with an estimated repair time of next Tuesday(!), she was on generator power at home for over 32 hours, and:
"The nice man I got at UPPCO explained that a very high wind gust (estimated 80 to 100 mph!) had hit a main power pole and exploded it, and it was taking some time and a lot of checking to get it repaired."
She further reports:
"I was just looking at the data for the mid-Superior buoy, which is the closest one to us. The peak of the storm apparently was between 4:00 and 6:00 last night, when the wind was blowing at a steady 44.7mph (they don't report gusts), and at 6:00 the waves were 15 feet high."
Fortunately AT&T apparently had the land lines working by early Saturday afternoon.

Further, as of 4:00AM (EDT) Sunday 9/5/2010, UPPCO is still reporting 13 customers without power in ZIP 49950 (Fulton, Mohawk, Eagle River (MI), Central, Bete Gris)!

Ol' Superior sure was in a rage, and we aren't even in the "Gales of November" yet!

Looks like another round is coming for tuesday. 40 mph winds? waves? the whole shooting match! Not going to be a fine day for a picnic or a boat ride.

Since it was such a nice day on my day off today I headed to the big lake (by me anyways) Lake Winnebago. Took some pics, winds were 30 to 40 MPH. Not as impressive as Superior but cool none the less.
