If the owner's grandson can drive a No. 3, why shouldn't the legend's son?

A news conference at the end of the month is expected to expound on plans for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to drive a car carrying the same number as his late father's Chevrolets, ESPN.com reported Thursday, citing sources.

The same sources said it wouldn't be a black car like the late seven-time champion's best-known ride.

Whatever color, it's expected to be entered in the Nationwide Series event at Daytona International Speedway in early July.

The cable sports network's site reported that Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richard Childress, Teresa Earnhardt and Kelley Earnhardt would take part in the formal announcement on April 29.

(Details on new souvenir items available for sale – from a vendor to be determined – could be coming soon, we feel confident in reporting.)

Six of Earnhardt's Cup titles came in Childress Chevrolets.

His son was in a No. 3 entry in NASCAR's second-tier series twice the season after Earnhardt's death in the 2001 Daytona 500.

Austin Dillon, the grandson of team owner Richard Childress, has run six Truck series races carrying that number.

It will be nice to see the #3 on the track again! (Yes, I know Austin Dillon drove it. I mean with an Earnhardt behind the wheel}

I was never a fan of Sr. But, I do like Jr. There is only one person that should ever drive a black number 3, and that is Jr.

Never will happen...

If Junior can't put a #1 Hendrick car in the winners circle in five years, why would Richard Childress want a loser wheeling his cars? Let's just say it folks! Junior hasn't got what it takes to be a winner. He'll always take a back seat to more talented drivers. But I will never forget his fathers prowlessness behind a Winston Cup car. Dale Sr.is an Icon.

Dale Sr. is definately an icon. His style of racing would never fly these days though. He took "rubbin is racin" a little to far. Remember when he just snowplowed Terry Labonte at the end of a Bristol race because he couldn't pass. There were Earhardt shirts with his car with a Meyers snowplow on it after that race. He was a great racer, just not the cleanest racer.

He may not have been the cleanest driver but then again back then they were all racers and rubbin' was racing! He could be in the worst handling car on the track and still find a way to make it in the top 5...that's determination! The sport will never be the same without him.

I was at the Texas race last weekend. Because of the rain all weekend, when we weren't drinking beer in the mud, we spent alot of time at the vendor trailers. Of all the souvenir trailers (basically one for every driver) Dale sr's still had the biggest gathering of people, and jr. ran a close second. He is definitely an icon in the race world. Finally got to see the Sprint Cup and Nationwide race on Monday. 800 miles of racing, a lack of sleep, way too much southern cooking, and a a 5 day kidney flushing made for a very long flight home Tuesday. I was never so happy to return to the family and work in my life. BUT MAN WAS IT A BLAST:)!!!!

As far as jr running the #3 car-I'd love to see it. If ever it was to come out of retirement, jr is the only man that should be allowed to do it. Come on jr.---make daddy proud, and put #3 in victory lane again!!

Jr. was a victim of having an inferior crew chief for many years. From 2000-2004 he had 15 wins in 5 years with Tony Eury Sr. Does that sound like a looser that does not know what it takes to win? Tony Jr. comes in and the bottom drops out. Hendrick should have never let him bring in his own crew chief, but he wanted Jr. to be comfortable in his new surroundings. Finaly last year they began to see results with a new crew chief and are still seing them this year with him being 8th in the points thus far. The wins will come.

Jr. doesn't like the COT car. He hated the thing since it was born. That's his excuse but I seriously think he probably doesn't sleep much being the most popular driver. He has alot of expectations to fill but it really shouldn't matter. Retire the 3 and put it to rest. Nobody will ever fill that car again. It's just a big mass-media deal that will gross Jr. another $30 million. Whatever.

An FYI. NASCAR does not retire numbers. You may request a specific number or NASCAR will assign you one. Thus RCR has been requesting the number 3. There is also a blind eye turned by NASCAR as to what RCR does with that number,to use or not. RCR's #3 is stylized. The stylized #3 is copyrighted and trademarked by RCR I'm sure, though he turns a blind eye to the local racer running a stylized #3. Remember there is money to be made off of the stylized #3 in the big leagues. Also Childress drove #3 when he raced as an owner/driver. Ricky Rudd also drove a number 3. Sr went on to make the number iconic.
Having said all that someone could run a non stylized #3 in NASCAR but they won't out respect, common sense and possible trademark infringement. NASCAR would strongly recommend no too. In the past large sums of money have changed hands between teams for a specific number.
Personally I'd like everybody to just let Sr. rest, it's time.

Here is the skinny on numbers in NASCAR..many of us have been partially correct. My proir post had info that I confirmed with a NASCAR midlevel office official. Neither one of us can hardly beleive we've been around racing for 30+ years.

What follows is a copy and paste from www.jayski.com.

NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers to an owner(s). NASCAR reserves the right to revoke or transfer car numbers to another owner/team at any time. Car numbers are non-assignable and non-transferable, except by NASCAR. NASCAR works with teams and sponsors when a specific number is requested. If duplication of numbers occur, which usually happens with the part-time teams, the fastest qualifier usually gets to use the number unless one team is considered full-time. In 2002, the #27 was used by Scott Wimmer for Bill Davis Racing and by Kirk Shelmerdine, both part time, however, Wimmer was listed in the #27 and Shelmerdine in the #`172 and when they attempted the same races, Wimmer got to use the #27 and Shelmerdine ran the #72, so NASCAR uses it's judgement in deciding who runs the number.(9-6-1999/9-17/2003)

AND NASCAR said it owns the numbers used in the Sprint Cup Series, not car owners. And since they own the numbers, they're not for sale. Car owners are allowed to lease each number for one year, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. Teresa Earnhardt, who currently controls her stepson's #8, can renew that lease next year to keep him from using it.(6-26-2007)

AND 2: NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis. Teams do not own the numbers. Teams submit to NASCAR requests for a car number. Depending upon availability, that number is issued via an owner’s license, which is good for a year. However, one team may allow another team to use the number with NASCAR’s approval. For administrative purposes, the official car number may be a three-digit number, however on the car only two digits are displayed (a 100 and 200 would both display as 00). If there is a conflict at any given time, by general procedure, the team submitting an entry form last would have to pick an alternate display number. Generally, if a team has been using a number that number is re-issued to the same team. If a team relinquishes a number, it reverts back to NASCAR.(Pocono Record)(6-5-2009)

AND 3: How NASCAR allocates car numbers:
• NASCAR owns and assigns the car numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis.
• Teams submit to NASCAR requests for car numbers. Depending on availability, that number is issued via an owner's license, which is good for a year. However, one team can allow another team to use the number with NASCAR approval.
• Generally, if a team has used a number, that number is re-issued to the same team. If a team relinquishes a number, it reverts back to NASCAR.

I personally am and always will be a great fan of DALE SR he was the man, as far as his car # 3, I would like to see it race again, but by probably nobody else than JR. He will probably never come close to filling his dads shoes, but he still is his son and no one else should have that opportunity to drive the number 3
