years ago we used to be in the northern part of Wisconsin the 2nd week of December riding and as time went on kept being pushed north, new years eve used to be a tradition for our group but now even in the U.P. can be iffy. If I had to guess winter is the deciding factor of a successful year as a whole for the north woods, even if you do not like winter this weather is hurting a very big industry and a lot of mom and pop establishments in the north woods, global warming, season timing changes, el nino, cyclical weather, the fact is the lack of snow hurts a lot of people and businesses and im sure a very big reason why participation in the sport is slowly dwindeling. Hopefully something will give sooner than later because anyone that relies on winter needs it to happen. However still early yet, this weather is very unfortunate for us all.

Yeah it looks like December is toast. Seems like the season starts later and goes further into spring, had an awesome back country ride last April.

X2 on all of that euphoric1!!! We been migrating further north for many decades now too. Bottom line is this, without ride able snow, we're toast!!! And that goes for many other winter time sports, and recreation also. I know many families, or riders, that have gave up on snowmobiling so as there's just not the weather conditions, snow, to be able to do so, on the time available, and the costs involved. Slowly progressing worse.

The little bit of snow we have here will be gone after tommorow. The only good thing is that Lake Of The Woods has over a foot of good ice so if it ever does snow we will at least have that. However the last time I checked LOW is still in Mn where the speed limit is 50 even when you can see 10 miles ahead. Would rather be in Wisc on the Chip Flowage going 110.

We have been over this before, but apparently you still don't understand that weather is cyclical, and those RECORD winters that you remember from the late 70s and 90s were NOT a benchmark for "normal" WI winters. And since we seem to be entering a period of low solar activity, it's likely that we will see some very good winters in the near future. Maybe not this winter (since we have a mild El Nino starting up), but there should be some good ones soon. Don't worry about those trace levels of CO2 that we have released; they are not radically altering our climate, as you have been mistakenly led to believe.

Perception and reality are VERY different when it comes to the memories of winter for most people. Read this for a better perspective: https://dnr.wi.gov/wnrmag/html/stories/1996/dec96/weather.htm

The problem is our lives are NOT cyclical and I am 50, if this ****ty cycle continues for another 10-20 years I am toast for enjoying riding and the young-uns will be drivin flying cars etc. They will not need snow to have fun.

I for one hope I'm gone before I see flying cars, no thank you, hours of riding in winter land, no radio, no tv, no one talking in your ear, nothing but me, my machine and beautiful country.... i'll take that any day before flying cars. I have introduced many to this sport and few have not taken to it and to this day cant understand how someone tries it and doesn't enjoy it. You're right our lives are not cyclical and I hope I am still doing this in 10 - 20 years. Instead of writing a letter to santa, does anyone know the address to that B**CH MOTHER NATURE???

I've always felt that if I'm riding in Wisconsin before or during Christmas, that's a bonus. With a few exceptions, even with adequate snowfall, the trails aren't the best until after the holidays from my experience.

Like I said, I have a hunch that we will have some really good winters in the near future, due to prolonged levels of low solar activity.

But I doubt that our trail system will still exist in 20 years, at least in it's current form. Between land owner issues, young people not joining clubs, tree huggers trying to close access to public lands, rising snowmobile prices along with stagnant wages, and the inevitable rise in fuel prices, it seems unlikely. Fracking technology bought us some time on cheap fuel, but eventually, demand will exceed supply, and prices will spike again. There are billions of people on the planet who want to live a modern lifestyle like us, and not enough oil for that to happen. Enjoy it while it lasts.
