Degree Of Difficulty Forecasting This Year?

What is different about this year that all meteorological agencies are having so much trouble with predicting snow storm intensity & track of snowfall? Are they simply trying to get too far out in front of the storm development or is there something scientific going on that is complicating the forecast?

It's called a split-flow. Basically when you have two, main, active branches of the jetstream. This is more of a hybrid one, but it is still causing the same fits that the more typical split flow causes.

There are signs that the setup causing this split flow (things upstream from North America) is going to break down as we head through next week, which could be good in two ways: 1) Increase the accuracy a bit more and 2) Allow some arctic air to find it's way into the lower 48.
