Dexter axle

Hi all, has anyone ever had an axle lock up on them at the pivot joint? We had to replace our trailer due to the axle locking up and pounding the frame apart. Totally destroyed it. Is there any one that lubes or greases that pivot point. My concern is, breaking down the rubber inside the axle. Thx Dan.

I'm guessing you are referring to the "torflex" type. I have had that kind of Dexter axle on my 2002 27ft and not had any issues. I'm surprised it would wreck the frame vs. just maybe having the rubber go hard and just loose the "springyness" which I would have thought would be noticeable as the tires would be the new "spring" in the system. Guess i will have to watch for this.

Sorry, for the lack of details. I was on my phone. Yep, Dexter torflex axle. It was a 1998 triton 2 place covered. The axle rusted to the point of seizing up the joint due to rust. It just hammered out the frame rails on the trailer. At least it didn't leave us roadside. I would always re-pack the bearings yearly and jack from the axle. I don't notice an issue what so ever. I'm not complaining just interested in maintaining and preventing it for another 12-15 years or so. BTW, I actually called Dexter and spoke to Bob in engineering. He seemed truly interested in our problem and surprised, by our issues. He indicated that they hadn't ran into any issues on there long term corrosion testing. I truly got the impression that he was interested. But,.... He wouldn't offer up a safe lubricant for the rubber insert within the axle. Oh yeah, I took the tire off and tried to beat the arm loose in one direction or the other with a 3lb hand sledge and a 1hr PB Blaster soak. No luck, locked up solid. Still bought another trailer with the same axle.

I had an axle go bad but it was on a 1974 camper mostly in the early days of trosion axles at didn't rust up it just had no flex left in it I replaced it, it didnt cause any damage replaced it in about 1998.
I am susprised it wrecked the frame
