Since I saw the post from Sklar and the other one about camping up around munising and I know it was extreamly windy on the south side of the state. (almost 20 foot waves at some points) I was wondering if they shut the bridge down and for how long yesturday??

According to NOAA the highest wave height recorded in a 30 mile area from the bridge was under 10 feet. Just FYI.

30 miles from the bridge does not afford much "fetch" or open water to build those waves. I suspect the waves hitting western Michigan and Ontario were very significant, and likely even the big boats stayed put.

I have been in both lakes when the waves were much bigger than 10 feet and whole sailboats with tall rigging would disappear between the waves sailing just 50 feet away. You are wearing life gear, and tied in, and hanging on...for sure. When waves of that height get going you no longer try to make your destination; you simply try to quarter the waves and keep the right side up. When all else fails, you run with it til the blow lets up.

I did a quick perusal of ship positions yesterday afternoon on Lake Superior. Not one reporting boat was venturing out of port. The Marine Buoys - in the middle of the lake - were generally reporting 13 to 15 footers yesterday. I am sure that the south shore was getting hit by larger waves. Remember, with average wave heights running around 15 feet you still get the occasional "rogue" wave that could be well over 20 feet. I think it would have been a very good day to be in port.

Wish I would have taken my camera with me. The kids wanted to see it so we headed down to St. Joe at the peirs. Waves were breaking the peirs and still hitin the lighthouse at least 8-10 feet high and the light house set's a good 10 feet back from the edge of the peir. Reminds me of when I was a kid and went out with my dad and brothers so they could go scuba diving. Storm came out of no-where and dad straped me to the captains seat on a 28 foot cabin cruser. All I saw was sky and water until he finally got them up and on the boat. Called coast guard when we got close to the peirs and they were there to make sure we made it in. About the only time in my life I saw my dad scared, expesially when the coast guard responded to dad to make sure whatever life jackets we had on had plenty of color to them and advised that my brothers keep there tanks on and drop there weight belts. Once we got in they took us to there station cuz the waves were still so high that we couldn't go under the railroad bridge. About 8 years old at the time. Never got sick up until that day and to scared to get sick that day. Now put me on the big lake with 1 foot waves and better have dramimine for me.
