Mi-TRALE to hold DNR Youth ATV Safety Class

Mi-TRALE will hold an ATV Youth Safety Class on Saturday, September 10th. The classroom portion of the class will take place at Skip and Sandy Schulz's residence, 610 Greenland Road, in Ontonagon. The 'field training' will take place behind the residence.

Children between the ages of 11 and 15 that successfully pass the course will receive their Michigan Department of Natural Resources ATV Safety Certificate. Children 12 to 15 years old may operate a 4-wheel ATV only when the operator is under direct visual supervision of an adult AND when the operator possesses a valid ORV Safety Certificate. There is also specific obligations that fall upon the parents or legal guardians of ORV riders under the age of 16.

Mi-TRALE has been holding the Youth ATV Safety Classes throughout the Western Upper Peninsula for the past 4 years. This will be the only Youth ATV Safety Class in Ontonagon. The organization is looking at potential sights to host the class in Baraga, Gogebic, and Houghton Counties this fall.

Mi-TRALE covers the costs of the instructor, while the Michigan Department of Natural Resources covers the cost of the classroom materials. Last year, Polaris Industries donated two Youth ATV's for the field training. The field training is not a part of the MDNR Youth ATV Safety Program.

"We do this to make sure that the children know the safe and proper use of an ATV. Plus this allows Mi-TRALE to show the children the correct way to ride an ATV," commented DNR Certified Instructor, Skip Schulz.

Schulz states that the class is open to ALL children between the ages of 11 and 15, whether they have or ride an ATV or not. Schulz asks that the parents NOT bring an ATV to the class, but use the Youth ATV's provided by Polaris Industries. Earlier this year Schulz was appointed by the DNR to be on a special Youth ATV Safety Council for the State of Michigan. He will be attending a conference of those appointed to this commission this week at Silver Lake State Park, near Hart, Michigan.

The Mi-TRALE Youth ATV Safety Certification class will begin at 9:00 am and run till 3:00 pm. Children are asked to bring a 'sack' lunch. Mi-TRALE asks that the students Pre-Register by calling Schulz at 884-9101. You can also e-mail Schulz at sschulz@jamadots.com Parents are encouraged to attend.

"Mi-TRALE is proud to provide the Youth ATV Safety class, as we not only go over the laws, the safe way to ride an ATV, but also the proper usage of an ATV when it comes to protecting our enviornment," stated Schulz.
