From the DOT website

Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number. Also, commercial intrastate hazardous materials carriers who haul quantities requiring a safety permit must register for a USDOT Number. The USDOT Number serves as a unique identifier when collecting and monitoring a company's safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections.

My back round is in transportation and the answer is fairly simple. If you use your vehicle, whether it’s a ½ ton, ¾ ton, 1ton and bigger, to transport goods or services that generate you an income, you are subject to the DOT laws that apply to the weight classification of your truck and trailer. This also requires a DOT number on the side of your vehicle. This applies to lawn care businesses, electrician’s, plumbers and contractors.

If you use that exact same vehicle for your own personal use, you are not required to have a DOT number, stop at any scales or follow any DOT regulations. Your vehicle still must be legal, with working lights, brakes, safety chains….etc.

Hope this helps you decide if you need a DOT number or not.

I'm certified thru the state of MN to do DOTs and if I remember right, it is that if your power unit and trailer are grossed out at 10,000 lbs or more and are in it for revenue then you need dot numbers. If your from MN and have more ?'s let me know. I have a DOT book.

most likely yes, like others are saying. It's free to get the numbers. But the lettering, inspections, and physical are all costs to you.

Indiana removed the DOT requirement for most small trucks (10k), I want to say they raised it too 26k. But any interstate travel still requires numbers while doing business.

Its about GVW what's GVW of the truck and trailer you may be fine with out the trailer if your GVW of the truck is 8,000lbs and the trailer GVW is 12,000lbs then you fall into 20,000lbs gidelines a duly PU GVW is about 12,000lbs so that buy it self used commercial use requires a DOT number it get technol as if your hauling your snowmobile to a race that has a pay out you need a DOT number if GVW is greatewr then 10,000lbs. GVW will be inside the door of your truck and should be stamped on the toung of the trailer
