As the title suggests, our group will be leaving for Alpine Wyoming next week. Just wondered if the guys/gals from Wisconsin/Minnesota/Michigan (midwest) had a favorite or suggested route? Alpine is south and west of Jackson Hole. Just curious if most take I90 across and what suggested route down and to 26/287. Saw today over on snowest the I90 is closed between Buffalo and Sundance. Thanks for any suggestions. I see alot of you head to Togwotee and figured some might have best travel route ideas!! Will have two trucks and trailers...

Ditto. Did Pat's route last year from NW Mke and it was perfect! 22 hours of shear bliss going out... coming back home was a different story.

Just got back yesterday. This above route is what we took. Seemed to work very well. On our way home ran into two different weather systems. Just into S. Minnesota had to call 911 after watching a SUV spin out, and rollover in opposite lane of traffic. Was an incredible site, helped keep us awake seeing this was around 3 a.m!!! Was about a 28 hour drive for us. Thanks again for the suggestions!!!!!

Hello
Glad to hear you made it back safely. Hope you had a great time. I had a few questions I was wondering if you would answer.
I am flying out to Jackson and heading to Alpine Monday staying at Rockin M and was wondering if you could give me any condition updates how the riding was, avalaunche dangers, did you get stuck alot, were did you ride, did you ride Idaho, how far into the mountains do you have to ride to find deep snow. how long can you ride before you have to look for gas. good places to eat. My 1st time out west don't know much just looking for some direction. thanks for any info.

alpine

not been out recently(leaving in 2 weeks) but have been to Alpine in the past and rented from the Rockin M. Great guy to rent from, he also let us keep the sleds ovenight right at the hotel we stayed at in town. We didn't bother riding in Idaho, plenty to see right there.
We headed up the trail every day towards the Box Y and played in those areas not real far off the trails. Many of the areas are pretty extreme so I'd definitely use beacons and carry
shovels and probes unless you're planning on only trail riding. Great area.

If you are driving from northwest Indiana, I assume the best way is to take 80 to 287/26?

Just make sure you are all fueled up when you leave Rawlins and have snacks, not much out there but wind and snow and 120 miles to Lander. Talked to some folks 2 years ago that almost ran out of fuel out there!

Any idea how the above route compares to the following Google Maps suggested?

Take I90 to Gillette, WY then take 50 south to 387 towards Midwest/Edgerton. Then take 259 south to I25. Take I25 to Casper and then 26 all the way to Jackson.

Thanks for the tip. We will be in a car with a 400+ mile range, but we'll make sure we top it off before leaving 80!!

We are leaving tomorrow morning also. My mother and I are headed to togwottee for a couple of days, she is 82!
Maybe we will see you out there.

Oh, the other way you could go is I 25 north off of 80 to Casper if the weather is bad north of Rawlings, just watch the weather.

We just came back from Dubois on Saturday night. We went through Gillette on the way out and came back through Hot Springs. We saved about 100 miles coming back through Hot Springs and roughly 1 hour plus. Hope that helps you out.

Thanks for the reply, good to know as google actually says the Hot Springs route is longer. We're heading to Jackson Hole Monday and I think I'll be taking the route mentioned on JD.com. Trust you guys more than I do Google!

I have to wait until the sun goes down. Since I know it goes down in the west, I point truck that direction. when sun comes up at my back I know I am stilling heading in the right direction. no rocket science involved. I prefer 80 or 90 over back roads. reverse instructions to get back home. Hope that helps. And don't forget to say, "Gee I thought the Rockie mtns. would be more rocky" when in the middle of Iowa, because you're not there yet. if in doubt consult a road map.
