I have been looking around at duramax trucks for a bit now and trying to educate myself as to the ins and outs of them when i saw that gm made what is called a LB7 duramax from 01-04.5. My question is what came after that and what is the differences? Why the change? ...........Thanks!!!

The lbz came out in 2006 and half of 2007 in the classic body style. They added hp and torque. It was the last motor without all of the emissions. This is really a sought after truck the prices are really high on them. You had the 6 sp trans also.

LLY came next then the LBZ then LMM and LML is the current engine.

Some to most lb-7 have injector problems. I have 164k on my 03 lb-7 original injectors and still going strong.
New engines=more torque and horsepower as well as added emission stuff. The LML diesels require a extra fuel called uretha which from reading cost a extra 6-10$ a gallon.

My brother has had all of them in his business and says his LML has the most power by far of any so far and the uretha has been no big deal.

The LLY has the injectors on the outside of the valve covers for easier replament as well as a catalack convertor for emissions. More horsepower than the lb-7

LMM has a particulate filter added for emissions plus same emissions from lly/lbz

LML has all stated above plus the requirement for the uethra. Has a second 7 gallon tank that require about 7 gallons in 5k miles.

Of all the engines the LB-7 seems to get the best mileage.
There all good engines so good luck

Ive heard and read diferent on the urethra.
Urethra has a high freezing point and ive heard of it freezing and shutting down the engine as it wont run without it.

But yes LML is by far the strongest off all the duramaxes made.
Seems like the more powerfull they get the more the mileage goes down go figuire lol

Okay here is what i have come up with

01-04.5....LB7 motor
04.5-05....LLY motor
06-07.5....LBZ motor....Possibly out of budget
07.5-10....WAY out of my budget....don't care

I had a 2003 LB7, added a programmer, airbox and 4" exhaust and it was fast and frugal. Averaged 17MPG in daily driving and would get 21-22 on the highway. Towed anything you could hitch up to it as fast as you dared. The achilles' heal was the injectors, 2001-2002's were the worst, 2003's were supposed to be better...I had no issues with mine.

People who like to do mods prefer the LBZ and earlier due to fewer or no emissions controls...the new ones can be tweaked but it takes more $$$. (At almost 400HP from the factory though the 2011 makes the same power as my tweaked LZB7 and still has a warranty.)

If I needed higher towing capacity I would not hesitate to get another one. Great trucks.

I have an 02 duramax. I love my truck. It is chipped, piped, and all that. I will probably drive it for another 10 years or until they invent my hover craft like on the Jetsons.

I totally agree with fredster. I get about the same mileage and performance.

I would be careful if you see a 01 or 02 with 120000 -130000 miles on it. That is when I and many others had to replace the injectors.

Ah Guys, it's called Urea, not Urethra. Do a search you'll see that urea travels thru the urethra. If you are putting urethra in your truck I'm a thinkin' you're going to have problems!

good reading guy's...just wanted to add that the urea from my gm dealer is about $10/gallon, but it is suppose to?? take about 1 gallon per 1000 miles, so in theory should only require filling every 5000 mile service....we'll see. Still putting the goodies on mine (tonneau cover, mud flaps and of course, lots of stainless. Should be on the road by the end of the week. My first diesel...keepin' my fingers crossed!!

My son has an 03 he loves the duramax but he has several issues with the Allision transmission. Complete rebuilt two years ago with new warranty having trouble again and dealer not wanting to honor his own warranty. I have not heard of alot tranny problems just wanted you know He experience, I am looking for a new truck and with all the trouble that he has had he is pushing me real a hard to go diesel GMC or Chevy, then he can buy it when I trade in three years.

Just got my 2011 durmax first of the month. Said I would never buy new again after several other new trucks in the past but just had to try the urea route. All I can say is WOW what a truck. My last truck was a dodge cummins, and before that a ford powerstroke. The other older brands dont hold a candle to this new diesel with duramax putting 397hp out. I can't speak for other 2011 diesel brands on how they run but very impressed with this chevy. My wife is mad I didn't get a ford for more cab room. I think its the only complaint in the family right now. Getting 17.2 miles/gal driving short trips to town and back. Got down to 11miles/gal pulling cattle trailer weighing 27,000 lbs. Lots of weight but plenty of power to pass anyone safely while loaded. Hoping for fuel mileage to get better as truck only has 1100 miles. Wouldn't worry about the urea cost. We have it figured to save us $20 to $50 savings every 5000 just on the fuel difference to offset the urea cost. Maybe I'm wrong but it was a good selling point to the wife. By the way, the only reason I bought new was I could buy all the used 08 duramx diesels with 25,000 to 30,000 miles for only $3,900 cheaper than brand new 2011 chevy.

It took my 03 about 7-8K miles until it was broken in. MPG's rose all that time. Seemed to peak by 10K and stayed there for duration. Glad you like your '11. The press reviews have been very positive.
