Eagle River Report 2-24-20

At the cabin for a week, will try to post as we move around. We have to trailer from here as the roads are bare so we'll be moving around.

Started in ER yesterday, went following route: 13N, 6W, Club 7S, 8W to Boulder, 15S, 10E through Sayner, on the lake to the north, 8E, jumped on the lake to Bauer's Dam, 13S, Club 17S back to Eagle River. In general, the good is pretty good and the bad is really bad. There is good cover on the trails, but, in the morning it is frozen solid so little for cooling. My sled was running 15-30 degrees above normal all day. It was better once it loosened up with the warmer temps. Not sure what will happen later in the week when temps stay below freezing.

Almost all of the trails were flat, with the exception of the Conover club trails. They had not groomed Sunday night so were really rough. According to the bartender at Bauer's, they were grooming last night so that should be taken care of.

Any trails on roads (except forest roads) are bare asphalt. Stay out of towns if you can. If you have to travel through a town, you might as well be resigned to buying new carbides when you're done. Boulder is really bad. If you have to stop there for gas, I'd come up from the southeast and head back out that way. Went through Sayner for the first time. Cool town and not as much road travel as Boulder but all bare asphalt. There isn't enough on the shoulders that you can avoid riding at least half on asphalt. If you're going to Bauer's Dam, take the lake or at least come up from the south so you'll only be on the road for a 1/4 mile.

If you're leaving Eagle River to the north, take Club 17 along the highway. You'll stop every 10 yards for a driveway but avoid road rash. There's a mile stretch of 10/13 that is along a road and is bare asphalt.

Club 7S and 8W to Boulder is flat and well covered.

There are definitely bare spots on the trails where they've been exposed to sun but not that many. I took a few pics if we stopped somewhere. They're pretty representative of the good.

Today we're riding 3 Lakes/Lake Tomahawk, St. Germain, Sugar Camp and will try to report back.

Sorry, you'll have to look sideways. Heading out for the day and don't have time to look up how to rotate these.

It always amazes me that areas in the Northwoods plow the sides of the roads clean where trails run.

Yeah it is amazing. You would think they would leave some for the sleds and to save the roads from stud damage and damage from carbides.

I was told it is because there are more "transplants" that bring their big dollar entitled attitudes demanding their road gets scraped.

I could also say that it probably has more to do with lifetime locals not wanting the trails there. I actual know and met a few plow drivers in my area and ask them to try to leave some snow and they they say the can’t or just don’t care and snowmobiler’s. So can’t just blame the big money transplants.
