What is the average that people start riding trails up in the Rockland, Greenland, Mass City areas?

We usually dont come to the UP because we have our own place in WI, but we usually dont have rideable snow til Christmas or later. And trails arent open if we do.But this year we got a brand spankin new sledder, we a brand spankin new sled. And I am a little more pumped up this year for some reason.

And after looking on here, I guess I didnt realize how inexpensive some of the places really are. We dont off-trail ride so we really dont need 2ft of powder. We are used to WI so a little snirt here and there dont bother us at all. Slides are cheap. Prolly have 3 guys.

Dec. 9-12 a good bet? Thanks

I'd say that in 90% of the years you will be fine with those dates and in about 50% of them you could very well be riding in 2 feet of fresh powder.

I have not ridden many of the trails down in the Mass, Rockland and Greenland area, so I cannot speak to the need for them to freeze up (I am sure those that ride down there will be able to chime in), but I can say that the Bill Nichols trail from that area up to Twin Lakes and then Houghton has no real soft spots that need freezing up to ride. Same can be said for almost every mile of trail from Houghton north. All are either old rail road beds which are elevated above all the muck or improved logging roads which are also above the muck.

You might find some issues on the trail from Lake Linden to Gay and Gay to Lac La Belle. So riding to Gay early season can be a little wet, but all other areas are ok and those issues with Gay will depend on how much rain falls and how cold things are before the heavier snows fall.
