Mackinaw Island (if ice allows), Drumond Island, Grand Marais, Cedarville, Are my favorites in that order.

I have a suggestion for " nice place " to stay. It's called Pine Bluff Resort. It is just north of Curtis on Big manistee lake. Perhaps one of the nicest places . However their are it's drawbacks. The better snow / trails are north a little, up above route 28 and there is only a couple of trails in & out. There is another nice place called " Hill Top Cabins " in Grand Marias. The trails are some of my favorites between shingleton / miners castle and paradise. One of the Best trails is trail #8 between Grand Marias & Paradise and then the "crazy 8's " just west of GM. Seney also does a nice job grooming it trails.
Nice areas. I myself steer clear of places like Newberry , Munising, Paradise but that is just " IMO ". They are heavy traffic areas.

I did a backpack trip starting in St. Ignace, then to Paradise, then to Munising, then to Manistique then back to St ignace. Our group loved it. Stayed at Driftwood Inn in St. Ignace, Best Western in Paradise, Americinn in Munising and Grey Wolf Lodge in Manistique. Driftwood Inn Rooms are small but the food in excellent along with a crazy fun bar. Best Western Paradise was a nice new place and very relaxing, Americinn in Munising was nice and had an adult indoor waterslide. Grey wolf was really outdated but clean and on the trail. Hope this helps.

Totally agree. Stay out of Paradise, nothing Paridise about it. the local cop (sheriff) who lives south of town does not like snowmobilers one bit. Grand Marais welcomes you! One of the most memoirable trips was riding on Mackinaw Island with my RMK a fews years back. this is a very rare event for snowmobilers to experience.

PR1, I thought they didn't allow anything motorized on Mackinaw?
That would be fun to ride there though.

We have stayed in Brevort many times at the Chapel Hill Motel. Trail is just down the road to many different directions. I would agree with others stay away from Newberry and Paradise the weekend traffic is heavy. We've done the ride across the ice many times and it's a blast if the conditions are right. Sleds are allowed on island DO NOT speed a few places are open for lunch and we've always tried to be back across the ice before dark.

Snowmobiles are allowed on the Island. Here is a picture of me going down Main street and another on the bike path with the bridge in the back. And another looking down from the fort. Smurfrider and I did this on mtn. sleds 2 years ago. it is allowed when the ice bridge is open.

www.pinebluffresort.com Great place to stay. (built brand new between 2005 & 2007) I think the prices aren't to bad for what it is. The snow and trails in the Curtis area leave something to be desired but a quick rip to the northwest shore of the lake and you are in Seney and can go anywhere from there.
Unfortunately, due to the economy and the original owner losing the resort to the bank and the property owners association, they have limited the hours and days that the pool/rec. building is open to the weekends only and the bar / restaurant closed until April 2012. Still great vacation homes with lots of room and everything you need to have a good time. Lots of trailer parking to.

I would try and stay north of M-28 as much as possible...snow conditions can get pretty sparse in the southern areas. The trails north of Newberr/McMillan/Seney, that run up towards Grand Marais, are the BEST in my opinion.

Be aware that fuel stops can be few and far between, so if you see gas, stop and fill up.

I recommend the Fox River motel in Seney as you can ride in pretty much any direction, they groom very good and the owner is a sledder and president of their snowmobile assoc. there. His name is Don Reed and he's a great resource for anything about the area.Sometimes the snow is a little sparse south of town, but north of there is probably one of the most reliable snowbelts in the up.
