Elect Winch

I am looking at putting an elect winch in an enclosed trailer to pull a snowmobile that doesn't have reverse backwards in a trailer.

My question is what is the best way to power the winch and how long will they hold a charge in the cold weather. I don't want to wire to the truck battery.

Has anyone used a small generator or will this even work?

What type of battery should I use and how long do they hold a charge during cold weather?

You should consider a hand crank boat winch. Keep it simple, and it costs less money.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was a political post.

you can do a few things, get yourself a portable battery jump start deal, or power station,
that will run a winch more than long enough to get a sled on, a decent one will run about a 100 bucks or so, can be used for a few other things being portable, can jump start a vehicle if ever needed

OR like above said, get a boat hand crank and never have to worry about a dead battery
get a snatch block and it will double the pulling power and make a little easier I think on you!

add a cheap dolly to stick under the track(one;'s for ski's too will be a LOT easier on all things and once up a ramp, won't need the winch at all?

a deep cell marine battery will work too, just make sure you keep on a battery tender when not being taken on trips to make sure its always charged for you!

here's a few booster packs to look at

I think the Warn Drill winch would be a good option for you. I have a 10k on my off road truck and it will suck my Opti yellow top dry. I have to keep the truck running when using it. Look at the amp draw on the one you select. That will tell you how much battery you need. Go to Warns web site, they have a boat load of info.
