Elk Hunting

Just came back from Durango Colo hunting unfortunately we did not get a bull elk while we were there but we did see a lot of other animals while we were there and of course as soon as we left, there stands a large bull elk along side of the road. The mtns there are just beautiful, everyone should make that a must see trip, also we drove thru wolf creek pass, that was very exciting, a little slick but no problem, the ski hill was open when we came thru, and there were snowmobile tracks in the snow below the hill, that got my heart rate going

Wolf Creek pass is pretty tame now compared to the old days, I remember some white knuckle trips back in the early 80's, last time I hunted down there was 05 and you're right its beautiful country

Not to hijack this thread, but I just got back as well. We were in Grand Junction, CO. Saw lots of cows and spike bulls, but the legal bulls were all up high. Of the 3 of us, I was the only one who chose to hike the 2,000 vertical feet each day to try to get a glimpse of them - I was beat. Saw one legal bull for about 5 seconds through the aspen trees...

Had a great time though. Here are some pictures:

Camp got around 2" of snow (7,700')

Up top (10,400') had around 12"

Blutooth: How would you get the elk down to the truck if you did get one? Do you have to leave behind for the wolves?

I have a good friend that moved out there up Taylor Canyon & River maybe 35 miles from Gunnison. He has gone Elk hunting and has been shut out. We are both Jeepers and have taken our jeeps on many trails out that way like Taylor Pass to Aspen, Tincup Pass, Schofield Pass, Italain Creek Road to name a few.

Awesone beauty but to isolated for me.

hamburgchf, you didn't by chance use San Juan Outfitters that was who I used in 2005 for a Drop Camp hunt, they did a great job for me.

blutooth, great pic's.

Nate, you have to quarter them and pack them out on your back, once they are on the ground thats when the work starts

As Bradzoo said, pack it out on your back or with horses. We had horses that were accessible to some places, but you had to get it there first. If we had gotten anything, then the real work would have started!

I looked into San Juan Outfitters. We settled on Grand Junction mostly because of location (easy to fly in to as we were limited on time so driving wasn't really an option).

BRADZOO we did not use a outfitter on this hunt, but I did see San Juan Outfitters signs while we were there, buy the way while we were in Colo. I was told that a record Bull Elk is suppose to have been shot in the Black Hills this year
